From May 25–27, @safesportinternational will bring together athletes, researchers, safeguarding professionals, advocates, and people with lived experience from around the world to reflect on current challenges and help shape safer futures in sport.
Throughout the conference, #AthletesNetwork Advisory Council members Emma Thomas (@under_the_ropes ), @ahmar.maiga , and @jujuca1987 will contribute to discussions on lived experience, survivor support, safeguarding, and safer sport practices.

We’re excited to welcome Emma Thomas as the newest Advisory Council member of the #AthletesNetwork for Safer Sports 🙌
Emma (she/her) is a former Muay Thai athlete, survivor, sports ethicist, safeguarding consultant, and trustee of @safesportinternational . She is the founder of @under_the_ropes , an initiative focused on addressing gender-based violence in Muay Thai, signposting survivors to trusted resources, and providing consultancy services for sports organisations to advance survivor-centred safeguarding approaches.
📢 Drawing from both lived experience and academic research, Emma’s work focuses on helping sport move beyond reactive responses toward safer and more accountable systems. Her master’s research in Sports Ethics & Integrity became the first known study exploring athletes’ experiences of sexual violence in Muay Thai. She is also a trained safeguarding officer.
As a member of the Advisory Council, Emma joins a group of impacted athletes and allies who help guide the Network’s strategic direction and support its broader mission to advance safer sport worldwide.

Interpersonal violence is a public health, human rights, and labour rights issue. Research shows that an estimated 3 in 5 athletes have experienced violence in sport. 📊
Yet these harms are often normalized: harmful behaviours are seen as “part of the game”, power imbalances make it difficult to speak up, hypermasculinity reinforces this culture, and systems too often fail to prevent and respond.
It’s time to change the culture of sport by confronting harmful norms and practices. Let’s keep spreading awareness and driving positive change together. ✊
