Eighteen teams across three classes hit the water today in Chicago, IL for the first day of the U.S. Para Sailing Championship & Independence Cup ⛵️
The U.S. Para Sailing Championship is US Sailing’s annual adaptive sailing championship, held in conjunction with the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation’s 2024 Independence Cup. The event includes singlehanded, doublehanded, and triplehanded divisions and is open to all sailors with disabilities. After a day of clinic with some of the top coaches in the country, sailors are feeling primed and ready for a weekend of competition.
Race committee battled light breeze on Lake Michigan, completing one race before the wind shut off for the day. Tracy Schmitt & Ginny Duff lead the Independence 20 class, while Matt Koblenzer took the race win to stand ahead in the 2.4m class. Paralympian Paul Callahan sailing with crew Keith Burhans and Jen Edney sailed to victory in race one, putting them on top headed into tomorrow.
Stay tuned to the US Sailing social channels for all the action as the championship continues tomorrow!
