Hi there! I’m Juan Couder (@juancouder ), a Spanish artist based in Paris, taking over the Bristol Folk House Darkroom this week. My work often explores the vulnerability of the photographic medium through process-driven projects. Lastly, in “Witness”, photography is used as an ephemeral site specific intervention and its periodic recording. This series focuses on the transitions of the seasons, covering specific windows with photographic emulsion that constantly react to sunlight and humidity. Changing in density and color over time, the work explores the transparency and opacity of the photographic gaze, as well as a way of imagining ourselves inhabiting the very act of photography. Both a window-to-the-world and a mirror-of-the-self, Witness explores what might be a gaze interwoven with the world, since observing, is never a passive act.

Hi there! I’m Juan Couder (@juancouder ), a Spanish artist based in Paris, taking over the Bristol Folk House Darkroom this week. My work often explores the vulnerability of the photographic medium through process-driven projects. “Uadi” [وادي] is an Arabic term used to refer to a seasonal river that remains dry for extended periods of time, a landscape shaped by traces left by water, and its idiosyncratic absence. For this series I collected water samples every 7 days, and used them to erase the cyanotypes that I had done on the glass plates. Each week, the prints disappeared in contact with the water, letting a new ‘image’ begin. With a focus on the repetition and disappearance of the process, the Uadi series is conceived to be immediately erased: a performance that restarts with the photograph.

Hi there! I’m Juan Couder (@juancouder ), a Spanish artist based in Paris, taking over the Bristol Folk House Darkroom this week. My work often explores the vulnerability of the photographic medium through process-driven projects. In 2020, an encounter with a waterfall initiated a series of explorations into photography's vulnerable materiality and its relationship with time. Clepsidrae, 2024, is part of this research, whose name references an ancient Egyptian instrument used to measure time by observing water flow. Inspired by these timepieces, I developed a decanting process using cyanotype photographic emulsion. The work explores photography as a body vulnerable to time, presenting objects that transform according to the ambient light conditions. Thus, the pieces expose the beauty of a fluctuating world, fossilized in object form, a human resistance to constant change. Composed of a sequence of small-format pieces, the installation plays with the hidden, the opaque, and the transparent, inviting the viewer to reflect on the ephemeral and the uncontrollable.

Hi there! I’m Juan Couder (@juancouder ), a Spanish artist based in Paris, taking over the Bristol Folk House Darkroom this week. My work often explores the vulnerability of the photographic medium through process-driven projects. In 2020, an encounter with a waterfall sparked a series of explorations into photography as an ephemeral time measuring device. The project, Clepsydra, takes its name from an ancient Egyptian water clock that gauged time by the steady flow of water from a vessel. Inspired by these early timekeepers, I developed a series of unfixed cyanotype works using processes of dripping, sedimentation, and crystallisation. Over time, Clepsydra has developed through various chapters, each proposing a unique balance between resistance and acceptance within photographic practice—suggesting that permanence in photography is not an inherent property, but a human effort loaded with meaning.
