“ KILL THEM — THE MACHINES!! “
Is part of an unusual but revolutionary speech that Maria gave to the slaved workers of the underground city of Metropolis, inciting them to destroy the machines and the system that were slowly but surely killing them.
But that was not Maria who gave the speech, it was a robot created to take her place, The real Maria was a beacon of hope, humanity and compassion for the people, her likeness was weaponized to manipulate, seduce, destabilize, which resulted in their city being flooded and destroyed.
Metropolis warned us about the tension between the authentic and the artificial. Fast forward almost a century later, what in 1927 was seen as utopic is a reality today, where technology can replicate, distort, and even replace human presence in ways that blurs the lines between reality and fabrication.
Metropolis history and how it came to be what it is today, was thanks to people who found it, restored and made different versions and interpretations, just like I did mine when I first watched it.
Therefore, as fake Maria said and I misquote and reappropriate, my interpretation is: KILL THE FUCKING MACHINES.
