āThe term āTiniklingā translates to āto be/perform like tiklingā. Which is a local bird in the Visayas islands under the rail bird species, specifically the slaty-breasted rail (Gallirallus striatus), the buff-banded rail (Gallirallus philippensis), and the barred rail (Gallirallus torquatus).
The dance originated in Leyte. It was created in the likeness of how the tikling birds walk and jump over branches as well as dodge traps set by farmers with its long stilt-like legs.
An urban legend also says that the dance was a form of punishment during the Spanish colonial era. Where workers of a plantation who disobeyed orders or worked too slow were made to stand in between two bamboo poles. The poles would then clapped together to beat the feet of the workers. They must jump to avoid the poles.ā

Lapulapuās triumph in Mactan serves as a reminder of the power of unity and solidarity in the face of oppression and exploitation. Unity is essential to address contemporary issues rooted in colonialism.
*Iām not a historian, so correct me if Iām wrong*
Itās OctoBAR but imma take you back to April. Our šŗšø school system doesnāt teach us that Magellan was defeated by Filipinos, our Visayan ancestors. Visayan warriors were not āsavagesā but skilled & strategic fighters.
Magellan began his circumnavigation of the world 1519 with 3 ships and 270 men and arrived in the Philippines in 1521. After using his rizz to befriend the Rajah of Cebu, Rajah Humabon converted to Christianity.
In an attempt to convert all chiefs in neighboring kingdoms so that they could provide aid to Magellan, the homie Lapulapu and his people in Mactan stood their ground and did not convert or follow orders from the king of Spain.
Magellanās selected 49-60 (?) heavily armored men (European weapons, canons & sh!t) arrived on our land, and he was defeated from one of Lapulapuās ~1,500 men
Rajah offered Lapulapu a treasure of copper and iron in exchange for Magellanās body, but Lapulapu said naurrrr. Like a G
Lapulapu is credited for having delayed Spanish colonization by nearly 50 years. He is seen as a symbol of Filipino anti-colonialsm. We can honor Lapulapuās victory by learning from our ancestorsā wisdom, uniting in solidarity, and addressing the challenges our people face today.

No matter how far I stray from faith, family, friendsā¦
Thank you for reminding me that I can always come home. Wherever you go, there you are āØ
Now letās make it about me for a second š¤¦š»āāļø LMFAO big Panganay (eldest sibling) energyā
I used to resent home. The idea & way I internalized home. I was embarrassed. Felt othered & disempowered. So much so that out of perceived safety, I took it out on my parents and assimilated/separated myself from parts of me that mean the most to me today. šµš
Thank you for showing me what it means to have faith and trust in the unknown.
Thank you for teaching me the importance of community. The power of discernment in relationships with blood and chosen family.
Thank for allowing me (kinda) to follow my curiosities despite how much it doesnāt align with your upbringing.
Thank you for SEEING ME and working hard to better understand where Iām coming from!
Thank you for being open to exploring other ways of honoring the culture and tradition šŖš½
Honoring the culture doesnāt coincide with utang na loob. To me, honoring the culture & ancestors means working to love & embody the fullest expression of my true SELF, so I can serve, heal & co-create REAL change. Panganay vibes.
Getting here wasnāt easy. Our challenges are different. I can be grateful of the path you have paved before me without feeling shame or being fearful of the opportunities available to me today.
In the words of Ate @faithsantilla :
āSo let it be known, if you donāt already
Pinays have always been part & parcel, if not, imperative and critical to the struggle. Filipinas are no strangers to wielding our own power
Of all the privileges that exist in this world, none of which you may be a benefactor of there is at least one you bear
& that is the privilege of having been born a Filipina
Your DNA contains building blocks made from the mud of over 500 years of resistance & survival
& when you are ready, sis, weāll be right hereā
Love isnāt painful. Love is patient. Kind. Nurturing. Unconditional. Respectful. Love is home!
