I have some sample pieces that end up rising through the piles in my shop to become finished pieces.
I sometimes need to make a quick sculpture as a sample for figuring out how I'm going to finish a piece. The form gets to be anything. I like to experiment in these cases. Experimenting with finish ideas that probably shouldn't be tried on a piece I just spent a hundred+ hours carving.
This is one of those keepers out of my "sample series". 27" tall
I saw this stone sitting out in the sand at low tide. Something about its shape and color intrigued me enough to carve it, revealing some shapes one might find at low tide. The base is walnut with a chlorite stone barnacle. 14” tall.
“Witness” is a cedar owl carved and bleached on a carved post. It was nice to lean into something more representational for a change.

This one is called “Kelp Figure”. Big Island grown Mahogany. Another work that’s been hanging out in my shop with me for years patiently waiting to be finished. It’s been a spring cleaning series lately. Out with the old and in with the new. 67” tall.

I finished this guy today. Just in time to share next weekend in my hometown of Dayton, Wa. Excited to show work with my father Paul Strohbehn at Dumas Station winery for their Spring Barrel release. May 1st & 2nd 11am-5pm. Come say hi if you're in the area.
My Dad's recent watercolor paintings of owls inspired me to get after this piece that's been sitting in my shop staring at me.

Slipstream- Finished this fun wall hanging up last week. Carved from Lychee wood which was like carving stone at times, very hard but beautiful. 70” tall.
