A wonderful hour with librettist Stephen Kitsakos in the OECD this afternoon! Stephen is in Bloomington for a few days to discuss the development of a new opera collaboration with the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, "Swimming in the Dark". Many thanks to Prof. Michael Shell for making this visit possible!

Join opera librettist & author Stephen Kitsakos as he talks about his process of adapting works of fiction into contemporary opera. Kitsakos is currently developing Swimming in the Dark, a new chamber opera, in collaboration with the Jacobs School of Music Opera Ballet Theater. The work enters its next phase with a workshop this May here in Bloomington. He will discuss the fundamentals of transforming from page to stage as well as strategies for collaborating with composers. Video examples include excerpts from: The Wooden Sword, music by Sheila Silver, based on the book by Ann Stapler, Swimming in the Dark, music by Martin Hennessy, adapted from the novel by Tomasz Jedrowski, and A Thousand Splendid Suns, music by Sheila Silver, based on the novel by Khaled Hosseini.

This annual tradition is a chance to connect, relax, and recognize all you’ve accomplished. Chocolate Moose ice cream will be on site, along with games and entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Join IU alumnus Stephen Belans – West Coast-based drummer, producer, songwriter, and recording engineer – for a conversation about his multifaceted career in the music industry. Belans has contributed “playback” work on tour with artists including Elvis Costello and Julian Lennon, and he currently performs as drummer for The BoDeans. Before launching his professional career, he studied classical percussion at IU and performed in local Bloomington rock bands. This session offers students a chance to gain insight into navigating diverse musical paths and building a sustainable career.

We've just wrapped up an amazing visit to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music by David Cutler!! One of the world’s leading voices on arts entrepreneurship training, and author of both "The Savvy Musician" and "The Savvy Music Teacher", David led no less than seven sessions with students and faculty over a two-day period.
As an alumnus of the Jacobs School, we were thrilled to welcome David back for sessions that focused on innovation, creativity, careers, entrepreneurship, music education, and the strategic advancement of higher education in music.
Thank you, David, for sharing your time with us! We can't wait to have you back in Bloomington.
