J Ryan Kern is a Los Angeles-based composer and multi-instrumentalist who crafts textural, vintage-inspired soundscapes and scores that are both emotive and contemplative. While continuing his professional career as an orchestrator for NBC’s The Voice and playing arenas around the world with artists like LP and Carlie Hanson, JRK has scored independent feature films and released self-produced music aimed at conveying sincere emotions and providing a space for thoughtful, nuanced ideas.

Just wrapped the finale for Season 27 of The Voice—and already diving into Season 28. I’ve been on the show since Season 3, working behind the scenes as an orchestrator and copyist.
It’s not something I post about much, and I don’t have any behind the scenes glamor shots. But it’s been a steady part of my life for over a decade, and I’ve learned a lot from the pace, the musicians, and the quiet work of making something happen under pressure.
Not a big announcement—just marking time. I’m grateful to still be doing this.

Had a great time at IFS LA Film Festival this past weekend—still feeling grateful to have been recognized for Best Original Score, and for being part of a creative, sincere community of filmmakers.

Huge thanks to @clintclarksondp and Gregory Shoemaker for letting me contribute to this project. The film—a period drama/western based on a true story—offered some deeply authentic and nuanced themes to underscore. It was a gift to explore the music in the cracks between survival, justice, consequence, and regret.
The festival runs May 14-25 here in L.A., and the awards ceremony is on the 17th—hope to see some of you there!
