Keen gardeners braved intermittent hail storms yesterday for the first day of @camillashivarg ‘s charity plant sale and open garden. Join us tomorrow for the second installment, when the weather should be better and there are still plenty of desirable plants waiting for homes. #plantsale #opengarden #earlscourt

Stereoview by an unidentified photographer, possibly C.E.Goodman, showing a woman at her prayers. I think she might be a character called Clara de Clare, from Sir Walter Scott’s “Marmion”. #stereoview #marmion #sirwalterscott

Untitled stereoview by James Elliott. Possibly “Catholic Devotion”. Clearly a lack of shampoo in those days. #stereoview #jameselliott #praying

Stereoview by Felix Chevalier, depicting the legendary Robert le Diable at his prayers. The scroll below him reads, when translated, “When the Devil became old, he became a hermit”. It sounds like a good idea, but I suspect that foxy lady has other ideas. #steteoview #felixchevalier #robertlediable

Stereoview of Worcester Cathedral - from the River Bank, by Francis Bedford. If you are able to freeview the stereo pair, it is a beautifully composed 3D image, with the fence, and the boys on the river bank, adding dimension to what might otherwise be quite a flat image. #stereoview #worcestercathedral #francisbedford

Stereoview on the Clifton Suspension Bridge taken by Francis Bedford. The bridge opened in 1864 after more than 30 years of construction (HS2 is not unusual then) so this stereo was probably taken not long after. There is a label on the back offering large lithographic prints “ to be had on the bridge”, so it was evidently a tourist attraction as well as a convenience for travellers. #stereoview #cliftonsuspensionbridge #francisbedford

Ross - from the Oak Meadow. Stereoview by Francis Bedford from his Herefordshire Illustrated series, 1860s. Renamed Ross-on-Wye in 1931 due to confusion with other places of a similar name, the town promotes itself as “the birthplace of British tourism” as the rector started taking visitors on boat trips in 1745 to admire the picturesque views. I must say it looks more like somewhere in Europe than England. #stereoview #rossonwye #francisbedford

Stereoview of the Lodge, Stoneleigh Park, near Warwick, by Samuel Poulton. The same composition as one of my other posts today but taken in a different season and with a man standing in the lane. I assume it was a popular view that the photographer recreated to supply fresh negatives. #stereoview #tintedphoto #samuelpoulton #stoneleigh

Stereoview of a Lane near Stoneleigh, Warwicks. It has a London Stereoscopic Company blindstamp but I am attributing it to Samuel Poulton. #stereoview #tintedphoto #londonstereoscopiccompany #stoneleigh

The Lodge, Stoneleigh Park near Warwick. Hand-coloured stereoview with label associated with Samuel Poulton. I have also seen this image with a William Sedgfield label which is puzzling. See my other posts today for more images of Stoneleigh. #stereoview #tintedphoto #samuelpoulton #19thcenturyphotography
