INTRO TO THE TAIL COLLAR & A WORK UP TO RE-DIRECTS
I had an amazing opportunity to work with
@puppiesbythepond and their incredible bullies at my class with
@203k9
A request was made to find ways to mitigate a dog becoming collar wise and some ideas on how to set the dog up for success on redirects. One strategy is to shed the collar in a training session, very obviously right in front of the dog. Send them for a bite and while the endorphins are flowing and they’re occupied with the decoy, dress them with the tail collar, inconspicuously.
Many times, stim on the neck can provoke a fight response in the dog, while conversely, stim on the backside of the dog delivers a GTFO of dodge signal to the brain.
I’m not a fan of habitually sending a dog to a bite, from a bite. I feel this puts the dogs head on a swivel, diminishing focus. When I hit the door popper on my police car to have the dog deployed, I trained them to find me first, then look for information as what to do, instead of coming out and biting the first thing they see. I prefer to do the same in sport work, as it breaks down the exercise and compartmentalizes the process in a flow the dog can grasp more clearly. Bite, out, come to heel, line up, send, repeat… This is done with a large separation in the early reps, then slowly merging the decoys closer and closer. “Cyrus” would also fixate on one decoy, getting tunnel vision and target lock, making it difficult to switch gears.
The collar placement and slowly building the behavior chain, link by link, made perfect sense to this powerhouse bully 🙌
