To kick off Mental Health Awareness Month, I had the chance to visit one of @kidsmentalhealthfoundation ās amazing educational partners in LA, @paralosninosorg . We toured the school, learned more about the incredible work they do supporting kids and families, and I got to spend the day hanging with their 2nd graders ā¤ļø
The kiddos interviewed me using conversation cards created by experts, we played classroom bingo to get to know each other and build community, and even decorated pizzas š while practicing mindful breathing. I also got to give them a little sneak peek of my new show, @watchitsnotlikethat . Watching their faces light up throughout the day was honestly the best part āØ
Iām realizing more and more how important it is to create safe spaces for kids at an early age so they feel comfortable expressing their emotions and learning how to manage them. Mental health doesnāt have to feel scary or taboo. Organizations like @kidsmentalhealthfoundation are doing such important work by giving families free tools and resources that can truly make a difference.
Huge thank you to @paralosninosorg ,
@kidsmentalhealthfoundation , @watchwonderproject and @primevideo for such a meaningful day

This has been one of the most rewarding weeks of my life. God really works in beautiful ways.
Right as we wrapped our season on @watchitsnotlikethat , this incredible organization came into my lifeāand it couldnāt have been more aligned. Iāve been searching for something Iām not only passionate about, but thatās truly making a real, daily impact. @kidsmentalhealthfoundation is exactly that.
What these dedicated individuals are doing is powerful. Theyāre helping break the stigma around mental healthāsomething that, truthfully, affects all of usāby providing free resources and real support to families navigating it with their kids.
Iām learning just how important it is to make these kids feel seen, understood, and safe. Because when they do, they open upāto their parents, their teachers, their friends. And thatās where real healing and growth begin.
Thatās the goal.

Through a unique partnership with The Wonder Project, Amazon MGM Studios and The Kids Mental Health Foundation, we worked together to craft a resource guide for the show, Itās Not Like That. The guide offers simple resources on topics like divorce, grief, friendships, bullying, and more to empower adults to talk to kids about the topics covered on screen.
Last week we had the opportunity to share about this impactful partnership during a panel hosted by @HollywoodAndMind , focused on making simple but meaningful tools accessible to kids and families. The discussion brought everyone back together for a purpose-filled dialogue about how shows can intentionally integrate purpose and impact into an entertainment partnership by going beyond the TV and into homes where meaningful narratives can lead to meaningful conversations.
Panelists:
⨠J.R. Ramirez, Actor and KMHF champion
⨠Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson, Executive Producers, Creators, Showrunners & Writers
Moderated by:
⨠Dr. Ariana Hoet, Executive Clinical Director of Kids Mental Health Foundation
Heart is so full.
A week in LA celebrating #kidsmentalhealthday and finallyyy meeting the FAM -minus a few. š„¹
So proud of you @jr8ramirez for really leaning into this foundation and showing up for them.
@kidsmentalhealthfoundation you guys are rockstars! Not only what you do and the resources you offer but you as a team and as people, couldnāt be more in love with a group of humans.
Canāt wait for whatās to come.
We had a small(ish) budget and a very short(ish) prep time to build our two main sets - the interiors of Malcolm and Loriās houses. In fact, the first two weeks of production were spent on location so the sets could be finished and dressed. But Production designer Jay Pelissier, Art Director Cameron Beasley and Set Decorator Gretchen Gattuso totally rose to the occasion and delivered sets that were designed and decorated to tell the stories of our families!
Hereās what our stages looked like when we started all the way through our final walk-throughs with director Brad Silberling and our co-showrunner, Garrett Lerner.
ITāS NOT LIKE THAT premieres worldwide on MAY 15th with all 8 episodes on @primevideo !! Please watch!!
