Highlights from the Imagination Writers Featival at the @morrincentre in Quebec City!
The centre itself is a fascinating building that was originally built in 1812 as a prison. I was able to tour the prison cells in the basement. Pretty sure they are haunted. Attended some fascinating sessions with authors like Will Ferguson, Heather and Arizona O’Neill and Paul Myers . Loved doing storytime with the kiddos and making seed bombs. Had a fascinating conversation with fellow authors and illustrators, Elly McKay, Stace Chomiak, Kern Carter, and Loch Bailey at Laval University.
Plus… walking the street of the Quebec City. Thank you so much @morrincentre for having me!
So much fun sharing my stories with the kiddos at École Dollard-des-Ormeaux, as part of the @morrincentre Imagination Writers Festival. We talked about all the activities we like to do outside, including skating on wild ice and foraging - for blueberries and maple syrup. Thank you so much for having me!!

One of my favourite foraged foods!! Thank you to @jenniferlailey who showed me around her property where they’ve been tapping sugar maples for years. Hardwood trees are not common in this part of the country, but there are records of local Indigenous groups tapping trees on Anemki Wajiw (Mt McKay) hundreds of years ago.
Sugaring is a spring activity when the nights are still cold but the days warm up enough for the sap to flow. Too warm at night or too cold during the day and the sap doesn’t move. Once the sap is collected it is boiled for many hours until it’s evaporated enough to become syrup. It can take 40 litres of sap to make one litre of syrup!!

Yes, our unfortunate ‘Inciting Incident’ in SHIP OF SPELLS is the sinking of The Dawn Watch, a ship named after the book by friend, author Jean E. Pendziwol. It was published in 2004 by @groundwoodbooks and details the true life experience of a young girl sailing with her father on Lake Superior at night. Fortunately, it ends better for that girl than it did for our FMC, Honor Renn, but that’s another story… 😉🏴☠️⚓️🌊
