Very happy to be back in Mexico City! Looking forward to playing a couple of gigs & recording here in CDMX this weekend. Big thanks to @chacaldeltamborazo for setting it all up! Been fighting a little stomach bug these past few days, and was forced to miss a collaboration with Adriana Camacho Torres and others at Trasum last night :/ Feeling better today, and should be good to go for tonight & Saturday. Then back down to Oaxaca & the beach… Image 11: Family visits Chapultepec Zoo. Image 2: Poster for Friday at Pizza Jazz. Image 3: Poster for Saturday at Jazzorca. Excited to release “Cucumber” by Kenton Loewen & JP Carter on the Infidels label! I think it turned out pretty not bad! Release party this weekend (Sat May 17) at the Fox Cabaret, along with Kneejerk! On a personal note, I’m realizing it’s been like 15 years since I’ve recorded/released any of my own compositions. Since 2010’s ”Naranja Ha” by Aeroplane Trio & “A Vacant Lot” by Inhabitants. Wild! Not by any conscious choice…just been doing a lot of improvising this last decade and a half, I guess, and having a blast performing and recording other musician’s music! Anyways… Last fall, Kenton & I were discussing material to possibly play on this new recording, and I’m like, what the hell…I might have some stuff! Ended up bringing 4 tunes to the project: “Ka-By” & “Darkness, Daylight” were written in late-October/early-November 2025 on the beach in Mexico, so there’s a little bit of that in there, with a dash of insomnia. “Cloud Beach” & “Cucumber” are ideas that have been lurking for a while now in small notebooks. Big thanks to Kenton Loewen for bringing these tunes alive, making them ours, and just being open to trying them! What a guy. The album also features three improvised pieces, and a humble lil cover of Albert Ayler’s “Ghosts” to send you off into the night. Muchas muchas gracias to John Raham (Afterlife) for capturing and magically massaging the sounds, and Tim Reinert (Infidels) for getting this thing out there somehow! On vinyl! Heroic individuals. You can check out “Cucumber” on the Infidels bandcamp page, if you’re curious….full album available there now for digital download. LP’s available at the concert Saturday at the Fox.

NEW ALBUM ALERT! Drummer Kenton Loewen & Trumpeter JP Carter have been performing together in various Jazz & Rock groups for decades, and formalized their partnership as a duo in 2021 with It Becomes Us, the first release on Vancouver’s Infidels Jazz label. After a rave review in the Wire and dozens of performances honing their craft, they’re ready to release Cucumber, a stunning new album recorded by John Raham at Afterlife Studios, and released on the Infidels label on vinyl & digital formats. With 7 exciting original pieces plus a beautiful cover of Albert Ayler’s Ghost…Cucumber reminds one of famous trumpet / drum duos such as Don Cherry & Ed Blackwell, or Lester Bowie & Philip Wilson. It’s the not-so-obvious next step in the development of this groundbreaking Canadian duo, with a fantastic cover created by designer & artist Ehren Salazar. To celebrate this release, Kenton & JP will be performing a very special release concert on May 17th at the Fox Cabaret, along with Free Jazz band KneeJerk. Copies of the vinyl release of Cucumber will be available for sale at the show, as well as on the Infidels Bandcamp page on May 16th. Tickets are on sale for the Fox Show at the link in bio. Kenton Loewen & JP Carter – Cucumber Released on May 16, 2025 in digital formats, and on 12” vinyl. Kenton Loewen – Drums Trumpet, effects, electronics – JP Carter Recorded, mixed & mastered by John Raham at Afterlife Studios Produced by John Raham, Kenton Loewen & JP Carter Album cover art by Ehren Salazar Executive produced by Tim Reinert for Infidels, a Record Label. #infidelsjazz #jazz

JP and THE BATTERY is a project mainly based on improvised and spontaneous music. With this project, we will soon be performing at the Vancouver jazz festival and opening concert at Hero's Welcome to the great guitarist Bill Orcutt. Very happy to be part of this. A special thanks for the great photos to my friend and amazing musician Alex Catona.
