In April 2014, one year before I met Dan Gilbert and changed my life, I was working full time at IBM and grinding full time on Campless. I’d been at it for 2 years and had met most of the major players in the industry. But no one was interested in my ‘sneakerhead data’ side project, and we had zero revenue. In a rare PR victory, I had just done an interview on The Sitdown with Don Drew and Sneaker Sensei. I spent an hour trying to explain Campless on a lo-fi web cam while the two sneaker OGs alternated between a reasonable interview and mocking me. Jay called me a ‘culture vulture’ and questioned whether someone with my Excel skills could ever get laid. But these were the gatekeepers at that time, and when they said they were promoting a sneaker show in Baltimore the following week, I jumped at the opportunity. Eight days later, on April 18, 2014, I spent all night at a Kinkos in Center City Philly laminating oversized Powerpoint charts (slide 3) and printing tri-fold price guides (slide 4). The next morning I drove two hours down to a high school gym 15 miles west of Baltimore. For the next eight hours I handed out free price guides and comically tried to engage attendees in Econ 101 debates. At one point, VIctor Cruz toured the gym, going table by table to take pictures with each vendor. When he got to my table he just kept walking. I think he was embarrassed for me.  Yesterday, for the first time in twelve years, I stood behind a folding table at a show. It was a card show, not a sneaker show. And unlike Baltimore, I wasn’t alone (I was joined by a great ghostwrite team member and my 11 yr old son). But other than that, the experience was the same. I hyped a product (almost) no one knew. I repped the least visited table. I made zero sales. I stood in front of live human beings and pitched them, one at a time. I did a thing that doesn’t scale (s/o Paul Graham). Over the next 6 months you’ll see @_ghostwrite_ or graded ghosts at card shows across the country. And we’ll continue to be the least visited table. Until we’re not. But there’s joy in being the underdog. There’s a thrill in starting from zero. Truth be told, there’s no place I’d rather be.

From 2016-2020 I tried, continuously, to get Medicom to do a StockX Bearbrick. Finally, in early 2020, they agreed. The first image is the design we created for the first ever StockX 400% Bearbrick. The concept centers around the use of an actual StockX authentication tag inside the figure, effectively the heart, visible thru a translucent back. A 100% StockX Bearbrick would function as the authentication tag for the 400%. This design was approved by Medicom in April 2020, but did not go into production immediately. In September 2020, I left StockX. I do not know what happened next, but no StockX Bearbrick was ever created. It is, therefore, with joyful irony that I’m finally able to bring my design concept to life, this time from the other side of the table. The @_ghostwrite_ @stockx 10 Year Anniversary 400% ghost has an actual authentication tag inside it - the heart of it all. The 100% ghost was created separately, as a blind bag available only to team members. But the 400% (which also has a chase - 10 gold and 1 fire) is available to all as a blind Dutch auction at ghostwrite.com

New white paper. 140 pages. Best thing I’ve ever written. Co-written with @jesseeinhorn , my longtime writing partner — you might remember our 2021 paper, “Trading Cards Are Cool Again.” This is like that except, ya know, better. It’s called THE BLINDBOXIFICATION OF EVERYTHING and it’s about why a 17th-century French philosopher is the reason you’re addicted to repacks, why GameStop is a casino, why Le Creuset had to publicly apologize for selling too many spatulas, and what the Berenstain Bears knew about Labubu before any of us did. There are chapters on trading cards and prediction markets and Margot Robbie and the greatest card in the history of the Hobby (mine). @_ghostwrite_ is discussed, but only in context. If you like charts, there are charts. If you like pop culture references, we got those, too. Of course, sometimes a thing is both. Maybe most impressive, the white paper itself is an actual blind box, but you’ll have to figure that one out for yourself. Only slightly less impressive is that after 43 years of writing (41 with footnotes) I finally referenced the Organization of Cartographers for Social Equality (see the 17 context-free pictures in this carousel as proof). It’s not short, so I suggest downloading the pdf and printing it out, but here are the rules: 1. Do yourself a favor and use color ink, at least for Chapter 3.3 2. Read the Foreword online though (you’ll see why) 3. And don’t skip the footnotes. Never skip the footnotes. Good luck. (Link in bio)
