New white paper. 140 pages. Best thing I’ve ever written.
Co-written with
@jesseeinhorn , my longtime writing partner — you might remember our 2021 paper, “Trading Cards Are Cool Again.” This is like that except, ya know, better.
It’s called THE BLINDBOXIFICATION OF EVERYTHING and it’s about why a 17th-century French philosopher is the reason you’re addicted to repacks, why GameStop is a casino, why Le Creuset had to publicly apologize for selling too many spatulas, and what the Berenstain Bears knew about Labubu before any of us did.
There are chapters on trading cards and prediction markets and Margot Robbie and the greatest card in the history of the Hobby (mine).
@_ghostwrite_ is discussed, but only in context.
If you like charts, there are charts. If you like pop culture references, we got those, too. Of course, sometimes a thing is both.
Maybe most impressive, the white paper itself is an actual blind box, but you’ll have to figure that one out for yourself.
Only slightly less impressive is that after 43 years of writing (41 with footnotes) I finally referenced the Organization of Cartographers for Social Equality (see the 17 context-free pictures in this carousel as proof).
It’s not short, so I suggest downloading the pdf and printing it out, but here are the rules:
1. Do yourself a favor and use color ink, at least for Chapter 3.3
2. Read the Foreword online though (you’ll see why)
3. And don’t skip the footnotes. Never skip the footnotes.
Good luck.
