Had the pleasure of playing Tree Farm back in April while delivering a painting. The weather was perfect, the company even better, and the course itself was absolutely stunning. I snapped a photo from the 18th tee and kept coming back to it whenever I imagined my next painting challenge between commissions.
This piece was painted on panel, and I really leaned into the dramatic contrast between deep shadows and bright highlights, along with some intense color saturation. I’ve been working on painting with both confidence and control—combining bold, gestural strokes with large brushes and more delicate, precise marks with smaller ones. This study pushed me in both directions.

The 8th from @royaltroongc aka The Postage Stamp. The shortest hole in @theopen rota and the most fun to watch the pros play, especially if there is some weather. Short par 3s are my favorite and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed painting one of the best in the world while watching this year’s Open Championship. This will be going on the gallery wall @golfalldayt2g in Blowing Rock if you’d like to see it in person (and it will be for sale).

This work challenged how I maintain and push my painterly approach on a larger scale. I have had this canvas in storage for several years and finally took on the challenge between commission jobs this summer. I’m happy with the results and really hoping to get the chance to play this new course soon.

Here’s how I approach the color blocking stage (layer 2) of an oil painting, along with a few tricks I’ve developed to make this part more accurate and efficient—so I can get to the fun stuff sooner.
