Dear @potus @whitehouse , 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧. 𝐈 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞. This weekend, fishermen, sea farmers, gear suppliers, state and federal scientists and regulators, and other stakeholders for education, collaboration, commerce congregate to discuss the state of the industry at the 50th Maine Fishermen’s Forum in Rockport, Maine. The news came like a tsunami to the Forum on Saturday that the federal funding program “Maine Sea Grant”, was abruptly cut. This program has been a pillar of support for marine research, sustainability, and economic growth for more than 50 years. The forum floors filled with tears and fears as if everyone were drowning, and we were. This decision only amplified the uncertainty, anxiety and existential fears that already plague the fishermen of Maine. It was the reckless regulatory decisions by government officials with no stake in those decisions that forced my 9th generation fishermen father out of this industry more than 15 years ago. Please do not put others through what we have been through. I plea to you @potus @whitehouse @realdonaldtrump on behalf of the fishermen, please reinstate the Maine Sea Grant or present a proper alternative. A fisherman, a non-profit founder and a [wannabe] pageant queen walk into the 2026 @mainefishermensforum 🦞👑🫶🏻 … @rozaliaproject and I teamed up on Saturday evening to elicit conversation about the Gulf of Maine’s sexiest problem, GHOST GEAR, aka abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing equipment—such as nets, lines, and traps—that remains in the marine environment, causing “ghost fishing” by uncontrollably trapping marine life. This dress was made from 36lbs of recovered rope off Hart Island in Port Clyde, Maine in 2023 in collaboration with sustainable fashion designer @runaraay and a team of Rozalia Project volunteers.
