REVIEW: “Ashley Kaylynn Green’s world premiere ballet “Continuum,” a piece for six danced to music by Nina Simone and Nala Sinephro concludes act one with a warm, effervescent glow. From its opening image – Parks, Cronin, Young, Espinoza, Taylor, and Brunner gathered in a tableau, breathing together – “Continuum” cascades into a highly-physical, highly-personal exchange of love, connection, and support. Each individual performer shines joyously in this work. I find equal fortitude in quiet moments of connection (draping across one’s lap, an embrace, intricate partnering and lifts that breathe), and vivacious runs, suspensions, turns, and partnering. Legs toss towards the sky, lingering and suspending in time before soaring into the next movements. Buoyant jumps carry the women through grounded runs, skitters, and turns. And, notably, is the use of breath: as in the opening tableau, the dancers unite through their shared exhalation, shifting from one intertwined shape to the next, supporting one another both physically and emotionally. I find both calm and curiosity when three duets emerge, each offering varying movement and relationship qualities. A tender slow dance; a subtle, intricate conversation; a rush of passion. As the cast gathers downstage in a horizontal line, they share a final unison to Nina Simome’s “See-Line Woman,” radiating strength and confidence.” - Kristen Hedberg
