This year’s COP30 climate summit has been dubbed ”the Indigenous people’s COP”, but the people are not being listened to. On Tuesday President Lula approved oil exploration near the Amazon River, leaving the indigenous no chance but to storm the summit to have their voices heard.
Here’s part of my text thread with my friend Chief Ninawa of the Huni Kuin:
J: Do I understand correctly, that you and other indigenous are not being listened to, in regards to the forest and your homes? You are not even let into the conference rooms?
N: Yes, exactly. We have never had participation in the negotiation rooms to give our opinion. We are not listened to by the governments. We want concrete actions for addressing climate change. We need allies who recognize the wisdom of Indigenous peoples.
