At our recent Speed Classic Cape Town event, @ryanoconnorza and @jonwilliams07 reminded us how exciting and rewarding classic car investing can be.
Investing in these machines is thrilling, but not for the faint-hearted. Values rise, dip and surprise, yet the market can be analysed much like any listed asset. It’s in the details, rarity, provenance, condition and story where true value surfaces.

Whereas Warren Buffett advised investors to ‘never love a share’, classic cars thrive on passion. Collectors know every detail of their vehicles because most investment-grade cars come with rich histories that make them more than metal.
While capital growth is attractive, joy of ownership tops the list. According to Knight Frank, people buy scarce luxury goods first for the pleasure, followed by appreciation potential, safe-haven qualities, diversification and lastly, status.
Ultimately, scarcity remains the key driver of long-term value. Every car lost to rust, scrapping or export creates a gap that can’t be replaced.
