When @themissing23rd broke up, I took the money I made on our last show & bought a drum set. I ended up doing a Dead Kennedys cover band for Halloween playing drums shortly after the breakup. I don’t quite remember when we started jamming for Emmanuel Lewis, because those years of my life are slightly blurry, but I’m pretty sure we started jamming at the Wells house. We wanted to play fast, get drunk, & have fun. All 3 things we accomplished. We played a handful of fun shows around SoCal & even got a shotgun pulled on us while we were playing a backyard show. We recorded 2 demo’s and recorded vocals for the second demo on my birthday. Our songs are short fast and funny. MAäSK formed in the aftermath of a 2014 Halloween show, where I put together a Damned cover band with Chris, Oscar, and Ben. After the show, Oscar, Chris & I kept jamming, writing and recorded a rough demo & started searching for the right vocalist. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I reached out to my friend Thomas, who had just moved to town and shared a love for deathrock and goth. He came back with fully realized vocals that blew us away & MAäSK was born. We continued writing and eventually entered the studio with @armand_john_lizzy , recording 7 tracks—with some additional guitar work from Ben—and released Eclipse of Man in August 2015. After hearing Thomas’s vocals take shape, it became clear we needed someone to help play the songs live , so I sent the songs to my friend—and former Halloween cover bandmate(The Clash) Derek, who was all in & played guitar and sang. MAäSK played its first show on August 28, 2015, in Ventura, and went on to share stages with a wide range of bands, including TSOL, Prayers, BL’AST!, Culture Shock, Tiger Army & more. Chris moved to Idaho & Oscar transitioned to bass. Thomas eventually relocated to the Bay Area & MAäSK played its final show February 24, 2017—fittingly, at the same venue where it all began. We miss you Buck. Anyone have any good Buck stories? We broke down on our way to a show in San Francisco in Atascadero. We called Buck, he came up in his truck, picked us and our gear up so we could make the show & we somehow did! Thanks Buck!

Crazy to think M23 was the first punk band from Oxnard/VTA to tour over in Europe. Here’s a little sample of that tour. So thankful our roadie Mugger brought his video camera along to document this tour, smartphones were still years away from being a thing. #whatgoesontourstaysontape
