This recording was actually my original entry point for the band, who immediately became one of my favorites for many years. I picked up the original CD (I still have it!) when my friends and I just happened upon their show opening up for @trailofdeadofficial while we on spring break in New Orleans circa 2004. We were fans of Trail of Dudes but were unfamiliar with The Sword. Upon entry- it’s hard to express how severely they melted our faces. I immediately grabbed this CD as soon as their set was finished and proceeded to bring it home and play it for any set of ears I could find! As a result, I helped to establish a grassroots following in this region, as most people I knew instantly became fans after hearing this.
Years later I would occasionally hear folks refer to them as something along the lines of “poser metal”- which is so shortsighted. Just like Nirvana were a gateway band for me discovering punk, hardcore and underground music, The Sword exposed me to stoner and doom metal- genres that have since become some of my favorites. My friends and I weren’t aware of these burgeoning sub genres at the time, but we loved Sabbath and early Metallica, and to us, this EP was the perfect, irresistible marriage of the two.

Sure, the music’s alright, but my favorite part of this record is that the band name is Hot Tuna, the album name is Burgers and the cover photo is a car on a beach. Three things that have nothing to do with each other. And who cares?!🤪🤙 #nowplaying

Yesterday, while volunteering at Emmy’s school, one of her classmates came up to me and said “Dude! You look like a WWE Monday night champion!”
So it’s with the renewed confidence that I got from this youngster that I am able to confidently perform my set TONIGHT at Esoteric Brewing! I’ve got a big old set list filled with songs I don’t play very often so come hang out! This will probably be your only chance to get out all weekend with the incoming snow soooo…hope to see you there!
I found my planner from my junior year of High School. I used to enjoy carefully saving the labels from CD packaging to reuse as decorative stickers. It could be pretty painstaking at times. The releases are definitely of the time, but honestly I’d still listen to any of these today and I’m somewhat proud of my younger version’s taste🤓😆🫠
In preparation for my upcoming set at MidWest Friends Fest 2026, I’m going to be picking up some extra solo gigs in the new year! Happy to be a part of this one next month at Esoteric Brewery on January 23! Come hang out!
