One of the most common questions I receive about this piece is whether it was created digitally. The answer, without exception, is no. This work is entirely hand-drawn, meticulously crafted at A1 size, and completed using only the pens you see before you. There is no digital manipulation involved—just the patience and precision of traditional techniques.
While this piece was not the first in my collection to feature the distinctive, recurring pattern that has become synonymous with my style, it is undoubtedly the most well-known and widely appreciated. The large scale of this artwork provided the perfect canvas to explore my love for fine, intricate details. It gave me the creative freedom to refine and perfect the pattern, and to fully immerse myself in the development of the visual language that has since become a hallmark of my work.
A collector once shared that each time he viewed this piece in his living room, he saw something new. Another mentioned that after gazing at it for a while, the patterns seemed to shift and move. Comments like these fill me with pride, as they reflect the very effects I aim to achieve—qualities that give my work a timeless, ever-evolving presence.
Introducing our next artist who will be selling their beautiful work at the Katakata Festival. Don’t miss out!
I’m Jon Judace, a Brixton-based pen-and-ink artist weaving African and Caribbean culture into dreamlike, pointillist worlds. Each piece is hand-drawn in monochrome (with the occasional splash of colour), built dot by dot like atoms forming infinite imagination.
Beyond paper and canvas, I create with community in mind, through murals, workshops, and collaborations that uplift, inspire, and celebrate culture.
Define Gravity
The inspiration behind this piece comes from the fact that African hair defies gravity by growing upwards. The image also depicts a woman whose hair defies gravity, forming a spinning sphere filled with all the fish of the ocean. When I originally drew this, it was to show a woman doing the impossible — effortlessly.
This is one of the few pieces of art I have created that was coloured entirely with coloured pencils. Before completing it, I had a clear vision for the look I wanted, and coloured pencil was the only medium that could achieve that aesthetic.
Although this piece marks a slight departure from my usual style, it was a lot of fun to create and has been celebrated by the Jon Judace Art community.

Yesterday was one of those busy-but-good days. We spent it setting up with @massassi_b at Boxpark Shoreditch for her week-long pop-up, putting up shelves, arranging (and rearranging) products, and meeting some of the amazing creatives sharing the space.
If you're around, come by and check out @massassi_b ’s beautiful collection, plus work from @sunevcouture , @shimiroseuk , @sewmasterja , @jonjudace , @dank.mer , @dibabsh , @ionnamariedesigns , @oladipo2426 , and ndeylaaccessories_fam.
We’ll be here until Sunday 17th August, come through and check the space out!
I realised that I rarely share a complete picture of my creative process from start to finish. Although it differs depending on the image I'm creating, this one started with a pencil sketch, followed by hand-drawn pen work, and then a digital rendering to apply colour. The gold embellishments you see in the final image are the result of a technique I developed to replicate the beauty of solid gold. I much prefer black-and-white drawings and finished art pieces, but I do appreciate the beauty of full-colour work and will continue to experiment with both styles.
