I’m incredibly honored to be featured in the PRS Guitars ‘Jazz Appreciation Month’ blog on their website, along with two of my biggest guitar heroes, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola! Miles, Terri and I went to see the great Ron Carter at the Blue Note in NYC last night! It was a special engagement celebrating his 89th birthday, and he and his Foursight Quartet (with Jimmy Greene, Donald Vega and Payton Crossley) sounded fantastic, with the highest level of musicianship imaginable. He played some timeless songs in tribute to Miles Davis which was a real treat: “All Blues,” “Flamenco Sketches,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “Seven Steps to Heaven.” After the show, Mr. Carter was as kind and thoughtful as always. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to speak with him several times over the years, but being able to introduce him to my wife and son was really very special, since he is a hero of mine, and truly one of the greatest musicians of all time. It was a great night.

Playing with Buddy Miles was one of the highlights of my life. Buddy was the drummer for Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys, without a doubt one of my favorite bands of all time. He was truly one of my heroes, and later we became friends, and spent a lot of time together in the 90’s. This video is from one of the gigs we did together, at Crossroads in Garwood, NJ in 1997. We were playing “All Along the Watchtower,” and at 0:57 you can hear him say “Go ahead, Jon!” signaling me to take a guitar solo. It still puts a big smile on my face to hear him say that, all these years later. It was a very special moment for me. Video by Larry Blumenstein.
