The colors of Mexico arrive at the Met 🏵️
The countdown is on for the Met premiere of Gabriela Lena Frank and librettist Nilo Cruz’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, with a vibrant new production by @deborahcolker that takes enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s iconic paintings.
We spoke to co-costume designers @jonbausor and @wilberthgonzalez about the staging and working with artists from across Mexico to bring the production to life.
El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego is on stage May 14–June 5 and in cinemas May 30. Music Director @nezetseguin conducts.

Culturalframe.com on Frida and Diego: The Last Dream @themuseumofmodernart “The scenography, designed by Jon Bausor, intensifies this tension. Instead of neutral white cubes, the viewer moves through a constructed environment that borrows from theater: thresholds, symbolic props, and spatial interruptions that prevent passive looking. This is crucial. The exhibition does not ask for contemplation in the modernist sense; it asks for participation in a staged temporality where viewing is always slightly misaligned, as if one has entered the wrong act of a play already in progress.“ S. Goldman

Architectural Digest on Frida and Diego: The Last Dream @themuseumofmodernart
“In this sense, the exhibition departs from commemorative logic. It does not seek to celebrate, but to problematize. It does not seek to close a narrative, but to open one.The space designed by Bausor reinforces this intention: far from a neutral museography , it proposes a theatrical atmosphere that places the viewer within the narrative. The works cease to be autonomous objects and become active elements within a mise-en-scène.” Maite Basaguren @ad_magazine
