101. Remembering the brilliant Dick Avedon today on what would have been his 101st birthday. Ceaseless inspiration for generations of photographers. It is the honor of a lifetime to have been of service to his vision in 1993-94 straight out of college. What a first boss to have had accompanied by brilliant memories that will last a lifetime. I remain grateful every day. @richardavedonfoundation

THIS CHARMING MAN. Flashback Friday. @thesmithsofficial released this self titled album in 1984 and slide 2 & 3 shows the cover image. In about 1987 my sweet Mum unknowingly took this photo (slide 1) that always felt familiar and was one of my favorites from the haircut, the pine trees in our backyard down to the gold rope chain. Just feels like something, something incredible. Could it be that it was all so simple then? Indeed it was. Big up @morrisseyofficial and thank you for the countless tunes that have become the soundtrack to many of our lives.

MY WORLD. Anywhere with you, Dad. I celebrate you always, but especially on this beautiful day, Earth Day, 4/22. Today you would have been 91 years old. I still feel your warmth and know that I am surrounded by your love and protection, as I always was. You were total magic and your legacy lives on through your work, me and your grandson, Rowan. I’m honored and proud to be your only son and will love you forever. How lucky we were to have each other. Squeeze up Mom as I know you are together somewhere in this beautiful universe, bout the only thing that makes it easier to walk forward. What a ride!

“Stay far from timid, only make moves when your heart’s in it, and live the phrase ‘the sky’s the limit.’” Sage advice for all your Sunday scheming and big dreaming courtesy of the late-great Notorious B.I.G (@thenotoriousbig ) and April Photographer of The Month Jonathan Mannion (@jonathanmannion ). EARL. It’s impossible not to feel the weight of this day. @dmx transitioned on this day 5 years ago. While we miss his essence and presence, his work and words are still deeply felt. Today we celebrate his life. I’m offering an introspective image for the first time for purchase with the blessings of the Estate so that people could own a print as a reminder of him in their personal spaces. (Link in bio). Sending calm and comfort to all. 📷 @jonathanmannion

NEW JERSEY, 1997. A rarely seen body of work made at a pivotal moment in Hip-Hop’s visual history is currently on display in collaboration with @thejournaljc as a street-facing installation on the new promenade at Journal Square. Check it out if you’re in the area. I share a short description of the work with you now… Originally commissioned by Vibe Magazine and art directed by George Pitts, this series was photographed in Newark, New Jersey, and reflects the instinctive, community-rooted approach that would come to define Mannion’s career. At the time, Pitts gave Mannion the freedom to work with a level of cultural fluency and immediacy that helped to shape Vibe’s visual identity and, more broadly, beautifully showcased the way Hip-Hop was documented in the late 90s. All photographs were made on a 195 Land Camera using now-discontinued Polaroid 665 film. The images carry a raw, tactile quality that feels as important today as it did nearly three decades ago. Rather than functioning as nostalgia, the work reads as a continuous thread—connecting past and present through portraiture grounded in presence, pride, and everyday life. Now installed across the windows of the North tower of The Journal in downtown Jersey City, the series has been recontextualized as a public-facing gallery, bringing this work directly to the community it reflects. Mannion’s body of work transforms the space into an open, accessible exhibition—one that mirrors the same spirit in which the photographs were originally made. 📷 @jonathanmannion

NIKE SB. Teamwork makes the dream work. After watching the new video released the other night and being blown away by the talent of the @nikesb team, I knew that I had to celebrate each of them one by one. “Creased” and re-engineered for skating, these AF1s must have given them extra superpower because this crew simply crushed it. The camaraderie, support and vibe was unparalleled. Honored to have had my number called to visually bring these images to life! I gotta say, I fu€kin’ love these photographs. I will share plenty BTS from @greg.alders next week, you’ll see. Big up to the whole crew! Thank you for being so incredibly generous with your time and energy. @karimnyc @villewester @poepinson @antoniodurao @casperbrooker @cyrusbnt @josephcampos__ @elijah0dom @tgip_ @andrewmihalko , @bcraighill , @scubasteve , Quinn Baser. @dansolomito @dudleyversaci , and @marjorietgueche . 📷 @jonathanmannion
