“What Am I? Who Are We?” is pictured here from the exhibition “We Fight to Build a Free World: An Exhibition by Jonathan Horowitz” at the Jewish Museum, New York, 2020. The work incorporates an enlarged reproduction of a 1946 drawing by Arthur Szyk, who immigrated to the United States in 1940 and became a prolific anti-Nazi propagandist for the duration of World War II. The drawing seen here, “Pilgrims” (also known as “Mayflower and ‘Illegal’ Passenger Ship”), expresses Szyk’s ardent commitment to Zionism. The Hebrew phrase that appears in the middle of the drawing is from “Pirkei Avot” (Ethics of the Fathers), a rabbinic compendium of moral and ethical principles. Attributed to Rabbi Hillel, it reads, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” The second half of the quotation, omitted from Szyk’s drawing, appears on the adjacent mirror: “If I am only for myself, what am I?” Reflected in the work is a lithograph by Malaquías Montoya, “Cristobal Colón,” 1992. “What Am I? Who Are We?” and “Cristobal Colón” are both currently on view in the exhibition “The Future Will Follow the Past: An Exhibition by Jonathan Horowitz” at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.

“Peacock Hill Houses” at 303 Gallery opens tonight. “In 2001, shortly after 9-11, Jonathan Horowitz and Rob Pruitt moved to a dilapidated Victorian house in Fleischmanns, NY and painted it black. Peacock Hill, as the house came to be known, landed on the front page of the New York Times home section and became a local tourist attraction. Conceived of as a living, public sculpture, Peacock Hill was filled with artworks by the artists’ friends, and Horowitz and Pruitt hosted free performances and events. In 2012, Horowitz and Pruitt made a series of commemorative, Peacock Hill dollhouse sculptures which were to be exhibited on Halloween day. Hurricane Sandy hit two days before the sculptures were to be exhibited and they have been in storage until now.”
