January 24th Beach Art Show! For this event, JAF has arranged for Kent Twitchell to appear and accept commissions for drawn portraits of Jonathans and their families. A portion of his fee will be paid to the JAF as a charitable donation. Twitchell is an internationally renowned LA artist known primarily for his monumental portraits on the sides of buildings in Downtown and along the freeways, and has painted over 100 portraits and over 30 murals of Steve McQueen, Michael Jackson, Will Rogers, Kennedy, Reagan, members of the LA Philharmonic, and more.

“Here we grow again…” The Jonathan Club recently enhanced its collection by acquiring a Claes Oldenburg (b.1929) print entitled Sneaker Lace in Landscape–Line State. This two-color lithograph was created in 1991 and printed at the world-famous Gemini G.E.L. studio here in Los Angeles. Oldenburg is a Swedish-born American artist who was associated with the Pop Art movement! The piece is displayed at the Jonathan Beach Club. In April 2019 JAF was pleased to acquire this painting, assisted with major funding by the Betty and Richard Oxford Trust. Anna Hills was one of the highly talented artists who put Laguna Beach on the map as a premier art colony during the early twentieth century. Born in Ohio, she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Woman’s School of Art in New York. Like many artists of her generation, Hills continued her studies in Europe. Her longest period was spent in England, at St. Ives, Cornwall. Returning to the U.S., she moved west in 1912 and established herself in Laguna Beach. Once in California, she responded to the bright light and rich, colorful landscape. She remarked that she had to retire her “European” palette and start over with brighter colors. She traveled widely and became particularly attracted to the desert landscape. She worked primarily in oil, using brushes and palette knifes. Her palette knife work is highly distinctive. Hills also became a well respected teacher, welcoming many art students to her studio from around the U.S. A founding member of the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1918, Hills was one of its most dynamic and progressive leaders and was a driving force in creating and funding the first permanent LBAA gallery. Hills died in 1930, shortly after the gallery’s opening. #jonathanartfoundation #annahills #artatthejonathanclub

Wine and Warhol at Sunset! Wednesday, October 2nd at 6pm Please join us to enjoy complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, as we watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. At dusk we will unveil the Jonathan Art Foundation’s recent acquisition, Sunset, a glorious screen print by iconic American Pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987). This work was acquired with major funding from an anonymous donor and will be the anchor for more contemporary art at the Beach Club.
