BLUE SENTINEL
🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹
I’m honored and proud to announce my second show with M+B(the first was Doublestar 4 years ago!). It opens this Saturday, June 28th. I would love to see you there.
Thanks to @benjamintrigano@mblosangeles for the opportunity and support….Kitty, Bradley, and Sean. (The aces)
Big thanks to my love @tinabarouti what a wild and amazing summer it’s been so far.

Somewhere between the shapes and the candles.
Another summer project I gave myself.
It’s hard to capture the surface value, but these paintings are done on putty reliefs I made, then cast into aluminum.
All 2024, oil on cast aluminum.

Thank you and all my love to everyone that came out Friday. I had a great time at the opening, as well as a wonderful birthday.
This project has been a lot of fun for me, and was a perfect “summer project”- I’m honored that I get to share it with you.
Special thanks to @gross_gallery_la for putting this together and for the accompanying booklet.
The show is up through the month by appointment (give me a holler if you wanna hang out in Chinatown, walkthrough, lunch etc).

Summer project 2!
These little paintings are color studies and personal construction puzzles.
I wanted to make a more dynamic “blank” like I use for the Wet Sister paintings, initially thinking I would introduce text into my paintings (like I have with photo). Instead, I split this project with the posters and made two different bodies of work. They worked better separately and I need to learn not to overdo it. It’s hard for me to keep things simple, so this was an exercise in restraint.

Yes, but what else?
2024
Screenprinted posters in 9 parts
22x18 inches
Unique and varied edition
One of my summer projects was this edition, a love letter of sorts to Los Angeles. All hand printed. It’s composed of 9 taglines, phrases, and/or “poems” that I would normally probably use as painting titles, but in this case wanted to present them very literally as they are as posters. These were displayed incrementally through the summer on light poles mostly throughout the Eastside (Pasadena-Silverlake), but I reserved a few to be editions without the staple holes. To my surprise the Westside doesn’t really have wooden light poles!
Anyways, I wanted this work to be seen and taken by LA, and it was fun (also kinda sad) to see a lot of these gone within 24 hours. Some are still up in Highland Park, and along the 110 N.
I’ve been a lifelong admirer of Colby Printing, which to me was as important and inspirational to 20th and 21st century art as any artist from LA, and I tried my best to mimic the ubiquitous Colby look. It’s as LA as it gets.
Also shoutout to Allen Ruppersberg, Sister Corita Kent, Eve Fowler, and Jenny Holzer as well.

Thank you @ramirostudio@bozomag@masseykleingallery for including this painting in your group presentation, Ghost Ship.
This giant moth was fluttering around the breakfast table in Roatan @casapequenaroatan
Probably drawn to us by the smell of fruits and cut flowers, crashing itself onto the table, before flying into the patio window. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Also seen is a collection of flowers I’ve taken (picked) over the past year to mix into other paintings.
Then, from a waning sprint, it became a walking opera

You’re probably in the painting…
And! Surprise! This is the largest painting I’ve ever made.
Come see the immersive installation this Friday, March 1st. Opening 5-8pm but up through April 7th

The gratitude list is long, but for now, thanks to @bannydowman for entertaining this idea/project for the past year and seeing the vision. It started out as a “wouldn’t be cool if we did a one painting show” thought….and now it’s this.
And again thanks to Sean Hernandez @press_friends for all the help and support.

Thank you to everyone who came to see the show.
Thank you to Adam and Lauren and Sadie for giving me the opportunity to show the work, and giving me the last show in the original location 🥲
This was the biggest project I’ve ever done with the most grueling production. It’s a total honor to have the work shown with yall @thepitla
Also big thanks to everyone who let me take their photo or recontextualize their drawings to make these paintings. It’s a privilege to be your friend, and the work wouldn’t be the same with out all of you.
Thanks to John @mut_la for building all my surfaces
Thanks to Sean @press_friends for teaching me the printing tricks 6 years ago, and for giving me the keys to your shop after hours.
Thanks to Ruben Diaz @docu_la for the photos.
All my love,
Jonathan
