There's no time!!

Natural Static started as ten LEDs on a wooden bar at my first residency after finishing school. A few years later, I made a printed circuit board version that performed a live translation between water motion and light

Earlier versions of Natural Static had no record / playback capability, but offered a live interactive experiene. While we were filming in Park Outremont, a girl took off her boots and waded into the pond to make waves for the machine.

In playback mode, the circuit boards are held vertically, the LEDs facing the wall to cast a diffuse glow. Water height data is directly translated to light intensity, replaying the sensor recording in light.

In the record mode, Natural Static IRL is held above a body of water, probes submerged below the surface. Each probe has a capacitive sensor that senses the height of the water passing by, recording it to memory 60 times per second.

Reflecting on my practice, the parts that I love the most are figuring out how custom hardware can realize unique visions. I’m opening up my practice to freelance work in this domain, with the aim of helping agencies and artists prototype and produce unique interactions. I love realizing wild ideas in hardware, and I have over ten years of experience doing it. I’m happy to be written into an artist grant, or work on a contract basis with an agency.
