There’s no better feeling than seeing your art, your creation come to life. For the past year, this story has existed either in my head or on a computer screen. It was an incredible experience to hear my script, TURNT, read aloud by such talented performers. I’m grateful to have friends like @vanessaprovenciofilms and @jusourluckfilms to give me such an opportunity @matchouston . Excited for the next step and the next draft ✍️

My grandma was my first best friend. Before I started school, when mom was at work, or when I was sick, she was who I was with. My favorite times were when she had to go to Pullin’s Meat Market to get the carne for dinner that evening. We’d stop at the Shop Rite on the way back and if it was the right moment, I’d walk back home with an IBC root beer in my hand. It was always empty by the time we got back. Sometimes she’d find a garage sale in a nearby neighborhood. She’d grab her visor and I’d grab my Braves hat and off we went. We would always walk away with something. Well, as long as it was $5 or below I would walk away with something. She was my walking partner and my chaperone. Smith Elementary was close enough to my grandparents house that she would walk me home from school. When I wanted to start walking by myself, she would meet me halfway until her and my mom thought I was ready to do it alone. She accompanied me once on a trip to the Museum of Natural Science to see the butterfly exhibit. These last few years, her house was decorated with butterflies all over. I like to think that’s maybe where that started. I even saw two of them today as we laid her to rest. I loved our adventures and they were the things I missed most as I got older. I drive by garage sales and estate sales now and she’s the first thing to pop in my head. She was a tremendous seamstress and I feel no fear when sewing a button or mending my clothes from what she taught me. We loved the Price is Right and even though I hated it at first, she gave me my first taste of coffee. She would say “Aye mi Rey” every time she saw me. She always made me feel like royalty and I worshiped her for it. I hugged her too tight and not long enough. Something I wish I could do one more time. But, as I go about my days and relish in the joy of life’s little adventures, I’ll know that it was because my grandma was my first best friend. Soila Adames Flores March 29, 1936 - February 14, 2026

In the last 10 years I’ve been teaching, I’ve learned that perfect things aren’t supposed to last forever, but the memories you’ve created and the feelings you get from them can. The version of me from a decade ago would be in awe of who I am now and proud of who I have become. Many thanks to the many women and a few good men I’ve stood next to and in front of. As the sun sets on my time in the color guard world, my only regret is that I’m not able to share more photos of my favorite memories with my favorite people. I found a home when I least expected it. Not in a place, but in people. How lucky I am.

A year ago, a little tornado blew in and took me for a spin. Time has flown by with all the adventures we’ve had together. Y’all would not believe how sweet and smart this little girly has become. Someone once told me I would love being a dad. I didn’t think I would love it this much. Shoutout to all of Vexy’s favorite aunties for the love and care they’ve shown her over this past year. Neither of us would be here without you ♥️ 💜

It’s difficult to settle on any words to describe what this past weekend has felt like and what it has meant to me. I think on how imperfect we all are as individuals, which is why we all blended so well together. I think on how each varsity cast is special and unique in their own way and how this one had such a particular glow and energy about them. I think on the usual multi week break I take at the end of the season and how I won’t be able to stay away as long as I usually do because I’ll miss this group too much. I think on how strong the ability to manifest the things you want most when you approach each day with a breath, a little patience, and a little love in your heart. And, I think about how much I love this team. After 10 years of service to the @katycolorguard I can’t think of a better reward than this. There will never be another feeling like it. “Maybe working on the little things as dutifully and honestly as we can is how we stay sane when the world is falling apart.”

She’s an ankle biter, sock snatcher, and the cutest little howler I’ve ever laid eyes on. My heart is full and it has been stolen by this darling, sweet girl. Vex is named after one of my favorite @critical_role characters, Vex’ahlia de Rolo. Being a dog dad is something I’ve wanted for some time and I could not be happier with my little ball of attitude. I can’t wait to share the countless adventures Vex and I will have together.
