Dedicated to Ukrainian Defenders: to those who protect Ukraine’s people, land, and culture in every way.
“Birds of Ukraine” is based on the traditional Ukrainian folk song “Ви галочки, ви чорнопірочки” (“Vy halochky, vy chornopirochky” / “You jackdaws, you black-feathered ones”), a recruit song that dates back to the 18th–19th centuries when young men were conscripted into military service and separated from their families and homeland. In this song, the birds become imagined messengers, embodying the soldiers’ longing to return home while facing the duty to protect their homeland.
“Ви галочки, ви чорнопірочки” was first recorded and documented by Iryna Danyleiko (@danylejko ) and @ehefilms .
“Birds of Ukraine” preserves the recognizable folk melody while placing it in a new context: the men’s voices move through different sonic textures, expressing their longing for home and loved ones.

“for Liisi” in memory of my closest childhood friend
“Liisile” (Estonian: “for Liisi”) is a reflection of the many memories I share with Liisi from our childhood. Liisi passed away unexpectedly in February 2021; this piece was written for and premiered at her funeral ceremony.

“Kodu” (Home) for violin and piano by Aavik Duo
Hans (@hansaavik.vln ) and Karolina Aavik (@karolina_aavik ) gave an introspective premiere of my piece “Kodu” for violin and piano last Saturday 🎻 🎹
Within a few days in September 1944, during World War II, nearly 80,000 people fled their homeland Estonia in fear of the impending terror of Soviet occupation – thousands died while fleeing. Based on Heino Eller’s “Kodumaine viis” (Homeland Tune), “Kodu” (Home), is dedicated to the children who fled Estonia in 1944. It’s written for those who couldn’t spend their childhood in their homeland.
Originally written for cello and piano “Kodu” was premiered by Cade Roberts (@cadepianist ) on piano, and my brother, Brendan Tarm (@barmtarm ), on cello. The premiere took place on September 22nd, 2024 at the New York Estonian House, during the 80th year commemoration of the “Great Escape.” The premiere was attended by President Alar Karis, Estonian-American community, and the children who fled Estonia in 1944. #violinlife #pianolife #composerlife
