Winners of the Scottish Landscape Photography Award 2025 and £1,000. @scotartsawards
Artists – Thomson & Craighead @jonandali
Title of work – ‘Gas Giant’ 🌘🌑🌓
Have you entered any major awards before / had any major exhibitions before?
We don’t often enter open submission exhibitions so are delighted to have been accepted this time, but we have been very lucky to have exhibited our work quite widely over the last thirty-three years. Most recently in Scotland last year, when we were one of four artists invited by the exhibition convenor Wendy McMurdo to show in the 198th RSA Annual Exhibition in Edinburgh.
What does winning this award mean to you and for your practice?
It really does encourage us to keep thinking about our relationship with deep time. Not just our own, but the way humanity can struggle to measure itself against inhuman timeframes. Winning this recognition spurs us on to complete this series of photographic light boxes: ‘Gas Giant’ is the first, and there is also, ‘Planetoid’ and, ‘Asteroid’ ready and waiting to be fabricated. In April this year we also shot a short film on Fair Isle, which we are editing right now, and like, ‘Gas Giant’ also tries to imagine a deep time by fictionalising the land.
Our 2009/2010 documentary artwork, 'A short film about war' is part of the group exhibirion "(In)Visibility of Violence" opening next week at Kunsthalle Giessen. Do go and take a look if you're in the neighbourhood: their program is so interesting there...
