With four summits in the can and three to go, The Last Ride Project has taken us on a journey way beyond the scope of anything we initially imagined. What started out as simply our next great adventure has become an investigative quest to better understand our world, ourselves, and our place within it.
Funding the project has been as big a challenge as climbing the mountains themselves, and so we are really stoked to see @artlist.io lauching their #Artlist100KFund for the second year. We applaud them for presenting opportunity for new voices to enter the creative industry and look forward to seeing where the endeavour goes!
In September 2021 I set off to the Caucasus Mountains in Russia with @edsalisbury & @williamrbtucker to attempt to climb and ski Mt. Elbrus - the tallest mountain in Europe. This began production on the @thelastrideproject the most challenging endeavour I’ve been a part. This was my first experience of high-altitude ski mountaineering, and the shoot was full of ‘learning opportunities’. It was physically and emotionally breathtaking and set us on quite a journey. These frames are from our first few acclimatisation missions from base camp. We are now four mountains into our goal to ski the highest peak on every continent and the film is really taking shape!

A few years back I shot and directed this campaign for @explorefrance with @joesampson_dop and @katy.cumbers We shot two films, this one aimed at older couples who’s kids have left home. We travelled as a three-person crew bouncing between an Arri Amira rigged for handheld and a RED Dragon on a dual-op Movi setup both with Ultra Primes. If was a fair amount of gear to handle as a small crew, but led to some pleasing results.

Jon is an award-winning Director & Cinematographer who documented the GB Freeski & Snowboard team’s @gbparkandpipe journey through two Winter Olympics cycles. As a nipper Jon ski-raced competitively in the UK and has always been deeply captivated and inspired by the beauty of our world. Jon is leading our creative direction to bring this journey to screen, and will accompany Ed and Will on these expeditions.

Standing at the summit of Kilimanjaro is a very strange and layered experience. It's both beautiful and tragic in equal measure, and very much feels like standing at the bleeding edge of the climate crisis. The rate of glacial retreat is phenomenonal with ice cubes like this freestanding in a desert of scorching sand. Since 2006 80% of the ice mass has been lost, and is predicted to have disappeared entirely by the end of the decade.
I found the experience incredibly humbling, and deeply saddening, yet the beauty that remains fills me with hope that collectively we can channel that inspiration into unity and positive action. #Kilimanjaro #TheLastRideProject #activism #climatecrisis
