The end of the puffin season in Iceland is always bittersweet - it means we won’t see these beautiful little birds again for another 7-8 months. But I feel better when I remember that they are simply going back to their true home out on the open ocean. It’s not easy being a puffin in Iceland. Sometimes you need to sneak in a midday nap just to make it through the day! #puffin #iceland #bird #birdsofinstagram #wildlife #puffins #seabirds #nature #naturephotography #icelandtravel #wildlife #audubon #latrabjarg #westfjords #lundi #birds #wildlifephotography #nikon #birding #birdwatching #naptime

This broiler and chimney at Sólbakki, just outside of Flateyri in the Westfjords, are all that remains of a whaling station run by the Norwegian Hans Ellefsen from 1889 until it burned down in 1901. The house where Ellefsen lived was then sold to Hannes Hafstein, the first Minister of Iceland, and then moved to Reykjavík where today it is used as a government meeting hall. #whaling #iceland #flateyri #history #ruins #westfjords #whalingstation #önundarfjörður #abandoned #lostplaces #whales #blackandwhitephotography

Common guillemots getting cozy at Látrabjarg bird cliff in the Westfjords of Iceland. They’re almost better suited to the water than to the air, as they can dive up to 180 meters underwater! #westfjords #iceland #wildlifephotography #guillemots #seabirds #birdwatching #audubon #exploreiceland #naturephotography #birds #nature #wildlife #latrabjarg

An abandoned Icelandic Viking Age village? Not quite - these houses were built in 2009 as a film set for a movie that never got made. Visiting at midnight in early summer gives the best of spooky vibes. Swipe for a bonus spine from a large whale lying on the shore nearby! #vikingvillage #iceland #vestrahorn #stokknes #filmset #vikings #midnightsun

Of all the places I’ve visited on my occasional journeys with @hxhurtigrutenexpeditions the Faroe Islands struck a unique chord with me. Wandering around and outside the capital Tórshavn, I felt the exact same sense of wonder as when I first came to Iceland nearly 10 years ago. The two countries (and languages) are similar in so many ways, yet different enough that I can’t wait to visit the Faroes again! #faroeislands #torshavn #visitfaroeislands #denmark #travel #harbor #harbour #hurtigruten #adventure #sailing

It’s that time of year in Iceland again - when endless summer days fade into crisp winter nights, and if you’re lucky, the skies catch fire 💚 @specialtours #northernlights #iceland #aurora #nature #auroraborealis #travel #astronomy #stargazing #spaceweather #norðurljós #ísland #reykjavík

I don’t generally post photos taken by others, but I found this one a bit amusing! During a science boat excursion in Jan Mayen with @hurtigrutenexpeditions I became just a little too absorbed in the contents of this plankton net. We collected an amazing variety of zooplankton, diatoms, and even fish eggs, providing an interesting challenge in identification to someone whose speciality is generally just a little bit bigger (whales). #janmayen #norway #kvalrossbukta #science #marinescience #sailing #hurtigruten #marinebiology #scientistlife #scientist

The sun hangs low over the first snow of winter in Bolungarvík, the northwesternmost town in Iceland. The tall mountains and beautiful views over the fjords nearby are unforgettable. For about a year I proudly called Bolungarvík my home, and I look forward to visiting again soon. The picturesque mountain Akrafjall, near the town of Akranes, Iceland, is unlike any other. It has the distinct appearance of being split in half - according to local legend, a massive troll named Jóka was carrying the mountain across the land when she suddenly dropped it to flee the rising sun. #akrafjall #mountain #iceland #landscape #nature #explore #aerial #aerialphotography #akranes #ísland #icelandair #icelandnature #mountains #dramatic #sunset #wanderlust #adventure #geologyrocks #westiceland #hvalfjörður

Harpa, the concert hall and conference center in downtown Reykjavík, might just be Iceland’s most distinct building. Its glass facade resembles fish scales, and on winter nights it lights up, evoking the whimsical Northern Lights. #harpa #iceland #architecture #reykjavik #buildings #design #clouds #architecturephotography #summer #design #exteriordesign #reykjavikloves #visiticeland #glass

For the third year in a row, a volcano has erupted less than 40 km from my home in Reykjavík, Iceland. 🌋 And every year, the capital area has been rattled by weeks of earthquakes leading up to each pressure release. These serve as beautiful yet hazardous reminders of nature’s raw power. #volcano #eruption #iceland #nature #naturephotography #explore #reykjavik #hiking #geology #landscape #lava #eruption #lavashow #travel #mountains #hiddeniceland
