Ingredients and application matter more than people think. What you put under foundation can decide whether it stays balanced, separates, lifts, goes shiny, or starts looking heavy after a few hours.
A base can look good immediately with almost anything underneath but the real test is 2–4 hours later. That’s when the chemistry of your skin prep, primer, sunscreen, moisturiser and foundation starts to show. Using @maccosmetics@embryolisse@rhode
When I want foundation to have the best chance of staying put, I look at the formula first:
water-based or silicone-based, how much oil is in the prep, whether the products are film-forming, how much slip they leave behind, and whether the layers underneath are actually setting or staying too emollient.
It’s not about using more products. It’s about using the right textures in the right order so each layer supports the next one.
I go through this ingredient-based workflow properly in my first course, including how I build skin prep around different formulas, skin types and wear conditions. It also comes with a PDF so you can refer back to the process while you’re working.

Silica helps blur texture and diffuse light for a softer skin finish, while magnesium myristate improves slip so powder buffs smoothly over bronzer and blush without looking patchy. Balanced emollients like squalane stop the formula from looking dry, which is why this type of powder works well lightly buffed over the skin before setting spray.

My og content I started this breakdown series back in 2023, and as a working makeup artist, these are still the reviews i find most helpful.
breaking down whether the @mphbeauty works on its own, who it may work for, and whether the underpainting really changes it.

This is probably one of the most underrated steps as a makeup artist. Foundation matching the rest of the body is so important
