Today, Yorkshire Cancer Research ambassadors @johnnynelson and @aaron_casserly_stewart carried the Baton for Yorkshire through Sheffield as part of the #WeWalkForYorkshire campaign.
Johnny was walking in support of his friend, Aaron, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2024. Together, they walked the Sheffield leg of the charity's landmark month-long relay alongside charity supporters and researchers.
The Baton for Yorkshire is travelling through 35 locations across the region, bringing together researchers, people with cancer and supporters - in recognition of the 35,000 people diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire each year.
Having started its journey in Hull, the baton has already travelled more than 115 miles and is currently making its way through South Yorkshire, before heading into West Yorkshire and finishing at the Yorkshire Cancer Research Centre in Harrogate on 28 May.
Johnny said: âItâs a real privilege to be part of the We Walk for Yorkshire relay and to carry the baton alongside Aaron, who has experienced first-hand the reality of a prostate cancer diagnosis.
âProstate cancer affects thousands of men every year, with Black men significantly more at risk. Itâs so important we continue to support research to improve early detection and make sure men get the right treatment at the right time.
âLike many people, Iâve seen cancer affect friends and family over the years. I lost my stepdad to prostate cancer and my biological dad to lung cancer, and witnessed friends experience the difficulties that come with a cancer diagnosis.
âFor me, carrying the Baton for Yorkshire is about people coming together and backing the research that can genuinely change and save lives. Iâm glad to play a small part and to walk for Aaron, and for everyone across Yorkshire affected by cancer.â
