Too immersed in punk rock culture beyond the casual/nostalgic listen and enjoyment to ever really connect/relate with my peers along with being Asian and the punk/hardcore/ska kids rejecting us and only saw us as posers, I got lost and forgot about being Filipino. Upon releasing In Loving Memory,
@theallright got recruited into the
@calivibesrecords family with their MO to seek out Filipino punk/hardcore bands to not just showcase and build our scene, but promote all inclusiveness, which the scene has not always upheld despite its dogma. Never stepped foot in the Philippines, but our first full length/vinyl is floating around there thanks to the godfather himself, Vince. Because of him, our music didn’t just make it to the home country, but was sold at
@punkindrublicfestival . Didn’t just get to say goodbye to
@nofx , but got asked to sign the last vinyl for sale to this random NorCal couple who said they’ve heard of us who were reluctant to buy any vinyl to travel back home with, but made the exception for us. Befriending primarily immigrants, I didn’t just connect w/ fellow Filipinos even more immersed/knowledgable in punk/hardcore/ska than I am, I was also introduced to the OPM scene and reconnected with my Filipino roots. We play shows together, we come out for one another even if our band(s) aren’t playing. No band sounds like the other, no band trying to get ahead of one another, it’s all love and support and more importantly, TAMBAY. It’s been the best of both worlds, both my cultures in these last 2-3 years. This celebration of Asian Americans in punk&hardcore by Joe was always a pipeline fantasy of mine. To be forever etched in this book, I’m eternally grateful.
