In the days after we lost Bobby Weir, I tried listening to Grateful Dead music as a way to be soothed. I found it harder than I’d thought. I felt as if I was listening alone, like the mainframe that connects all who listen at any given time had gone offline. (It turns out that a presence like Bobby’s makes for an immeasurable absence.) After talking with friends who felt the same, I knew I wanted to start Grateful Dead Listening Party. Every Sunday night at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific on SiriusXM’s @lifewithjohnmayer channel, I’ll be playing two hours of my favorite @gratefuldead and @deadandcompany recordings, talking a little about each one. It’s a way for those who have felt lost to “meet up” and listen to the music together. It’s not live, but I’ll be tuning in. Sometimes the least you can do is also the most you can do… we shall find a way forward.

Six years ago I wrote and performed whatever the opposite of a Christmas classic is. But I’m told it’s relatable, and that’s what counts. Wherever you are this holiday, may your bag be full. ♥️🎄🥗 (from my old Instagram live show Current Mood, 2019)

I had a blast at Dubai Watch Week hosting a very special live event for @audemarspiguet in the form of a late night talk show. Thanks to everyone who worked tirelessly to bring such an ambitious idea to life, including my guests @zlatan , @uarmyhope , @wei_koh_revolution , @brynnwallner , @malaikamc , AP’s Chief Industrial Officer Lucas Raggi, and of course, CEO Ilaria Resta. You can see it now on Audemars Piguet’s YouTube channel.

This video was taken the day I played through the first build of the @neuraldsp Archetype JM X plugin. We’d set up my amp rig in the live room and were switching between the rig and the plugin. I threw every test at it; does turning the volume knob to 5 create a natural response in tone? It did. Does a single note that’s held die out without a noise gate eating it or the “math” just giving up? It did. Do two notes bent at once with distortion on create natural harmonic overtones exactly like the amps in the room? They did, exactly. I had the engineer switch between signals without my knowing. “That’s the amps,” I’d guess. “Plugin,” the engineer would say, several times. It fooled me. Neural DSP had done it. It wasn’t just a faithful recreation of my sound - it was the first plugin I’d ever heard that proved that digital modeling could create a digital emulation with zero compromises. I’d like to say that we went back and forth countless times, making tweaks until it was right, but the truth is that they pretty much nailed it on the first try. Only a few EQ changes and some revisions to a couple of the effects pedals were needed. The thousands of hours of creation came to fruition yesterday when the plugin was released, and it’s been a joy to see and hear players putting this software to the test and being as impressed as I was in this video. Thank you to every guitar player who created such clever and great sounding presets and for spreading the word. I can’t wait to hear all the new music that’s created with this plugin. Getting my sound is just the beginning of what it can do, and I can’t wait to hear what musicians create with it.

After years in the making, It’s finally here - my @neuraldsp Archetype X plugin. It sounds and feels exactly like my rig on its best day, with expert mic placement and engineering. I threw everything I had at this project, knowing that you wouldn’t be reading this unless we got it right. And thanks to the brilliant minds at @neuraldsp , I can say we’ve created a plugin that perfectly recreates the sound and experience of playing my tube amplifiers, as well as my effects pedals and outboard gear. And now you can play it too. Head to neuraldsp.com for more. (link in bio)

People also ask the darnedest things. @brandicarlile and I break into a spontaneous musical celebration of the great @travels_with_mrs_mason . We also talk, and it’s a real good one - on a new episode of How’s Life? on @lifewithjohnmayer . Watch it on the @siriusxm app. 👼 🌍

We said goodbye to Moose yesterday. He came into my life when I needed pure love, and that’s what he gave me for 14 years. We traded on that love, as well as something else I now realize was important: routine. For a guy like me who left home at 19 and had never lived the same day twice, our routine brought real comfort and stability. When dinner is always at 8, and the afternoon walks are at 4:30, those kinds of things can heal your heart. And they did, time and time again. Today my heart is so heavy and sore, but there’s more love in my life than there has ever been, and that’s because Moose helped lead me to it. It can’t be long before I unearth an old tennis ball - there must be a hundred out there under sticks and brush that were too hard to fish out - and when I do, I’ll give it a toss, and think about the dog I had when I was becoming a man, and how he was such a good dog, and that there isn’t ever enough time. But there’s enough love. There’s more than enough.
