As an educator in her own classrooms, a barometer of dance excellence in the Twin Cities, and a legacy performer recognized nationwide, Toni Pierce was an artist and mentor whose impact operated on every scale.
In my own dance journey, Toni introduced a level of physical rigor I had never experienced. She pushed my limits with precision and care, honoring the minutiae of Aileyās Horton technique in a way that made the work feel both sacred and joyful.
Across our eight years together, she was an unwavering supporter of my queerness and a constant reminder to pursue excellence without apology. I was nowhere near the markings of her company members, but Toniās leadership during my undergraduate years, paired with her warmth, humor, and friendship long afterā¦ became foundational to the artist I eventually became. Her influence didnāt just shape how I dancedā¦ it shaped how I moved through the world as a creative. RIP to a legend. This is terrible. Itās sucks.
