‘But what about China?’
In the suite of climate #whataboutisms, it's up there.
China’s emissions have now been ‘flat or falling’ for about two years, with power-sector emissions declining as surging wind and solar generation outpace growth in electricity demand – the key to squeezing fossil fuels out over time.
And what happens in #China doesn’t stay in China. Chinese clean energy exports in 2024 alone are projected to reduce emissions outside China by around 1%.
Still, it's complicated: emissions from petrochemicals continue to rise, and China's new coal pipeline is eye-wateringly large.
‘But what about China?’ cuts both ways.

A year ago today the @ipcc published its #AR6 'Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023'
If you laid out the seven reports that make up the IPCC Sixth Assessment cycle on top of one another, they'd collectively stand 48cm tall and weigh 28kg.
