John Joseph Mitchell's paintings consider subject matter and interiority. Specifically, the sense that one's vision is figured by what we see, how we see, and how we think about the process of our own observation. "I like looking at things," John Joseph Mitchell comments. John Joseph Mitchell's remarkable works are built in a linear style characterized by a subtle sense of design and an expressive use of shape and color. Mitchell's attention to materials includes the hand-painted or stained frame that he makes for each painting. The wood grain of the panels on which he works is often incorporated into the structure of the motif - be it a baseball game, a farm field or a guitar lesson - with the texture and color of the wood working to figure the image. Mitchell thinks about how the physicality of paint application and linework - which in his case is sometimes incised with a hand tool - inflects the reading of the work. His practice opens up a give-and-take between viewer and art object, sparking perhaps a sense of Japanese Edo-period printmaking; late 19th and early 20th-century European Modernism; and the work of idiosyncratic American artists like Horace Pippin and Albert Pinkham Ryder.
