VU DEJA VU: car crash quarry rave [11.11.2023] Photos taken by @kondooooooopeness A location I first came across when Ladd organised a party there. Hugged by cliff faces and trees, a place only accessible by dubious goat tracks. We weren’t allowed to dance in clubs during Covid so we went out to nature to rebelliously find our feet . After some hours choppers hovered overhead, not really sure if they were looking for dancing dirtbags or what but was such a strange snapshot in time. This one was a party put on by the VU DEJA VU darlings. I’d just driven back from Mildura, raced to play, had a huge group hug at the end then came down with COVID. The irony. John and I have played B2B for years. Sharing music with one of my greatest friends is an honour every single time. I love the little scene here, people creating experiences selflessly. Thankful to have been involved in so many grassroot parties where you can really be present and realistic within a space with no real censorship of who you are and what you speak to.

We will not be playing Adelaide Festival this year. The day that we launched Groundcover Subsystem (a sound system funded by the people, built by the people to help amplify underrepresented voices) is the same day we learn of Adelaide Festival Board’s decision to drop Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah from Writers Week. This decision does not reflect our beliefs and values of humanity, expression, compassion and equity, and further pushes down people already facing extreme adversity. In their public statement they said it would “not be culturally sensitive to continue to program [Abdel-Fattah] at this unprecedented time so soon after Bondi” while simultaneously claiming “…We do not suggest in any way that Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah and her writings have any connection with the tragedy at Bondi.” It does indeed suggest a lot by choosing this course of action. This decision further perpetrates harm to the Muslim and Arabic community by demonising and silencing Palestinian voices. Do not conflate criticism of Israel with antisemitism. We feel deeply saddened for the new director and the amazing people we have worked with directly. They have exemplified nothing but professionalism, kindness and humanity. I cannot imagine how devastating it would be to have your hard work be compromised and undermined by a decision of a small group. We do not care for any opportunity, no matter how big, if it does not align with our values. We believe that as disabled/queer/gender-diverse people our presence on a line-up communicates more than entertainment. More importantly, we play sound system adjacent music which represents a deeply rich cultural history of adversity and liberation. In light of this, we hope that the Adelaide Festival can use this opportunity to reframe and build a board that represents the people that work with and for the festival while reflecting their values. In Abdel-Fattah’s words “In the end, the Adelaide Writers Festival will be left with panellists who demonise a Palestinian out of one side of their mouths while waxing lyrical about freedom of speech from the other.” We stand with you. In solidarity, love and integrity. Daria and John.

Groundcover Subsystem 🌱 a FLINTA run operation. More information on our website, link in profile. A small group of us have been gathering over the last year bringing to life a beautiful drunken idea by Big Muk. A sound system funded by the community to be utilised by the community. Sound system culture stems back to Kingston, Jamaica in the 1940’s and is the ancestor of many of the genres we love today. Jungle, drum n bass, garage, grime, dubstep & more. Sound systems were gathering points, bringing people together thru sound and transformed into liberating spaces for the Windrush generation facing adversity in the UK back in 1940-1970. The sound system will be its own entity rather than owned by an individual or crew, like a friend, it will be adored and called upon when needed. A monolithic hearth that will bring people together, open up skill-sharing, workshops and utilise people with operational knowledge. It’s refreshing to create outside of a capitalist ideal and instead ask for curiosity, initiative and support to help bring something to life. Something we hope will become a familiar friend that is loved and cared for by those around them. With a strong intersection of anarchism, community, kindness and cultural shifting the sound system stands for dismantling hierarchical structures in the music scene while attempting to help create equitable opportunities/platforms/access. Its darling heart has been nurtured and now it’s time to release its spirit and see what happens. This project will be whatever everyone makes it and is still unfolding before us. A beacon of sound that says more than the music it plays, an opportunity for us to continue exploring and learning through the process. There is a website to keep up to date with the project including info on our first fundraiser on 17th of Jan. We will be setting up a way to donate soon if you’re able to. In the future expect, zines, merch, gatherings, documentary showings and more?!

Moon Jelly NYE. Bringing heavy bass, goofiness and love. It was so beautiful to play with my greatest friend again for the first time in 4 months. Dancing and playing has landed me in bed for all of January so far but i cannot deny that accessing this space as a collective is extremely special and truly a privilege. Appreciative of the efforts to those that put their energy into curating and creating this space. I will not be able to play much this year but our next gig is for Adelaide Festival. Tryp part 2 after DJ Haram. 1.5 hours of dubstep brutality to tie out the night. I’ll be resting until then to save up my energy tickets. Much love and thanks for the love and kindness in return and also wow for throwing down to dubstep at what was predominantly a four to the floor festival 🙏🏼 we know the sound is a lot for most especially in a space where it’s the weird cousin.

Moon Jelly Festival - [we’re on 5pm-7pm NYE] a labour of love and passion for music and community from the @smallcitysystems darlings. This will be our first time playing since late August due to my health and we’re really looking forward to entering the music sharing realm as it’s a huge part of our love language and connection. I’ve been dealing with a currently unknown neurological condition so playing let alone walking much hasn’t been an option. I miss dancing and letting my body release what doesn’t serve it so this time together. Us and you. Feels unbelievable until we’re in it but it will be special and I feel grateful to have access to such a humbling way to connect and share with others. Expect sunshine appropriate dub, steppas, dubstep spring reverb, dub-sirens and left field goodness for those that want to roll and flow your body around, nod you head or lay down and look at the clouds. I imagine the sun kissing our blissed out closed eyelids before we welcome in a new calendar year. Please, dance for us in ways I cannot at the moment. That will bring much joy xx maybe we can hold hands as well. 📸 the darling @alexbrunton

Coki [UK] 28.08.25 - we don’t do professional photos or videographers. Thankyou to those that captured some bonkers moments. A diabolical, unhinged, irresponsible school night was had but Coki educated us in ways we needed anyhow. Something about this show felt so reminiscent of the slither of dubstep I experienced when I first moved to Adelaide in 2011. It was dorky and locked. Sweaty and unified. John and I have never let go of this feeling and after all these years of playing dubstep to people who didn’t wanna hear it and clearing dancefloor after dancefloor with an “uncool” sounds we see the efforts of a few local crews bring the ember to a flame over the last couple years (shoutout WAVECULT homies). Having a REAL underground space like Ancient World allows people to experiment, take risks and weave our identities and beliefs in what we do. Without this space DEEPTANK would not exist 🙏🏼 We bow to you all and to Coki for the collective energy on that fateful night. Did you initiate Goblin Mode or what? 🧡🧡🧡#dubstep #adelaide #coki #mosh #ancientworld

COKI is our last hoorah for a while. Appreciate you all so much. You’ve made John and I feel like we’ve found home, love and community in ways we didn’t know possible. My health has been deteriorating badly over the last year and we are working hard to shift foundations so we can continue to show up in meaningful ways in the future. Community. Activism. Music. Humanity. 🧡

Tonight we gather on Kaurna yerta. A deep gratitude to share creative & community minded spaces on such culturally rich land. Free Palestine today, tomorrow & 70 years ago. We acknowledge that the music we play stems from Soundsystem Culture which has a deeply rich history we encourage you to learn about. At DEEPTANK we try our best to be mindful, thoughtful and proactive with our spaces to create safer environments for people to be themselves. In a world that batters down the different, we celebrate it and approach our spaces respectfully while trying our best to understand the systemic oppresions that hold so many down. Please be mindful of the space you take up over others, ask pronouns if unsure, be curious not cruel. If you witness or experience concerning behaviour please speak to us or bar staff and we will manage the situation as compassionately as possible. We’re so looking forward to being the cutest dubstep dorks with you tonight. 🧡 Daria& John

We said we didn’t wanna do anymore events this year after having the the most wholesome time with @blackbarrel_leocap . We jokingly said we’d only put on a show if it was one of the greats, a legend. And we never knew that our passive manifesting powers were so strong because a week later Hugh (of Ancient World) messages us asking if we’d seen the promoter email for Coki. Like children, we paced around in false deliberation. Can we afford it? No. Are we exhausted? Yes. Does putting events on even make sense at the moment? Not so much. But COKI. Fucking COKI. 5 minutes and a few calls later we had it locked. COKI will join us for the first leg of his one weekend tour in So-Called-Australia. A Thursday night, which is the death of an event in Adelaide. But we call upon the real heads to roll in and celebrate us rinsing our whole kitty on this legend. We love what the @overload.5000 crew do and bring with their beautifully thoughtful events that feel safer and welcoming. They’ve shown so much integrity and passion and we want to share this momentous occasion and host y’all under our beautiful chicken wings. Imagine your first international show being COKI. Tickets up on RA. Will get a handful of cheaper ones up but for now they’re full price. Excited to see @renny_official and @johnjohnspencer go head to head for the first time in over a decade back when dubstep was absolutely honging in Adelaide. 🤍🤍🤍 FIRST CLIMBERS B2B DUSKI 🍉 xela rae B2B SKORPION KING 🍉 LHMTS B2B Mr. John 🍉 Are you ready to initiate Goblin mode?

THIS SATURDAY. DEEPTANK 5. Local cuties edition. Sweeties that were fundamental in pulling together our Leo Cap gig a few months back. A beautiful night to showcase this community we try to nurture and appreciate. Looking like a rainy night which calls for introspective warm times. Fire be lit. Corner be stacked with pillows and visually beautiful movies. Bars been asked to have hot toddies on offer. Our last DEEPTANK for a while. Door sales will go towards paying our artists and helping to support us in bringing something pretty exciting in a few months. Big love to all those fighting, loving and surviving. Free Palestine yesterday 🍉 liberation for all. Heart to heart.
