Ahead of the International Day of Light this Saturday, we are reflecting on the moments when light makes the biggest impact on how we feel. For over 45 years, we have been exploring the power of light, not only how it shapes a space visually, but how it supports the way we live, work, unwind and connect every day. From soft morning light to calm evening atmospheres, light has the ability to influence wellbeing in the most subtle yet powerful ways. To mark the occasion, our team share the moments when light matters most to them, with reflections from across our global studios and showrooms, from Dubai to Dallas. #InternationalDayOfLight #JohnCullenLighting #ThePowerOfLight #ArchitecturalLighting #LightingDesign #Wellbeing #InteriorDesign #LuxuryInteriors

With RHS Chelsea Flower Show just around the corner, we’re looking back at some of our favourite collaborations from previous years, starting with this unforgettable 2023 garden. 🌿 The striking combination of sculptures by @davidharbersculptures and the beautifully layered planting design by @jamesdoyledesignassociates was enhanced through a carefully considered lighting scheme, transforming the garden into an immersive experience after dark. Design Associate Estefania Marquez brought the space to life using a mix of our Kew spotlights, Hampton floodlights, Carellas, and Contour HDX LED strip, each selected to highlight texture, form, and atmosphere throughout the garden.

Part of our new series, Founding Director Sally Storey and Head of Product Alexander Leck explore the evolution of the Polespring range, discussing how technical innovation and refined design thinking continue to shape one of John Cullen’s most recognisable lighting collections. From tiltability and interchangeable optics to tool-less assembly and enhanced IP ratings, the discussion looks at how each development has been carefully engineered to improve flexibility, precision, and longevity within architectural lighting schemes. Because the best lighting solutions are not only beautifully resolved but also designed to adapt seamlessly to the realities of modern spaces.

In this second conversation from our Middle East showroom series, Estefanía Márquez and Ester Lipsch explore the quiet power of contrast in lighting design, where what is left in shadow becomes just as important as what is illuminated. From softly lit corridors to a single focal point drawing the eye forward, light becomes a tool for movement, guiding how a space is experienced rather than simply seen. A carefully placed highlight, a moment of darkness, a sense of anticipation, together, these elements create rhythm, balance, and atmosphere. Because without shadow, there is no drama.

Within the heart of Leaf House, the hallway and kitchen are shaped by layers of light that bring warmth, depth, and intimacy to the architecture. The central corridor, the ‘spine’ of the home, is defined by continuous uplighting that draws the eye through the space, subtly reinforcing its role as the organising axis of the house. In the kitchen, concealed Contour HD24 LED strips introduce a softer, more atmospheric layer of illumination, integrated beneath the island, behind curved joinery, and within shelving to gently reveal texture and form. Around this, dimmable lighting adds flexibility, while discreet downlights provide precision where task lighting is needed. The result is a quiet interplay of function and atmosphere, where light supports daily rituals while enhancing the architectural rhythm of the home.

At Leaf House in the Cotswolds, the entrance sets the tone for the entire home: a quiet, considered transition between landscape and architecture. Here, light traces the building’s central ‘stem’, guiding movement through the double-height hall and subtly revealing the sculptural staircase as it rises through the space. Concealed Contour linear lighting follows the architectural grooves of the ceiling, echoing the skylight above and shifting with the rhythm of daylight. By night, the scheme transforms into a warm, ambient composition where Polefinity 50 plaster-in downlights and Lucca 30 uplights gently define structure, volume, and material without ever overpowering the architecture. A restrained lighting language that allows the architecture and the landscape beyond to remain the focal point.

An inspiring afternoon earlier this week at the John Cullen showroom for a panel discussion as part of the @chelseadesignquarter springtime sessions on the principles of truly timeless kitchen design. Partnered with @hamilford_design and Mowlem & Co conversation explored how craftsmanship, considered materials, intelligent lighting and spatial planning come together to create kitchens designed to endure both beautifully and practically. The event continued with a wonderful lunch at the new @mowlemandco showroom, offering the perfect setting to continue conversations and share ideas with industry peers. Thank you to everyone who joined us for such an engaging and insightful occasion.

A thoughtful afternoon in our Dubai showroom with Estefania Marquez, John Cullen’s Design Director of the Middle East, and Ester Lipsch, Co-Founder & Director of Studio Design LO (@studiodesignlo ), discussing the importance of Colour Rendering Index (CRI) and the role lighting plays in our daily lives. From how materials are perceived to how spaces make us feel, light shapes far more than visibility alone. When considered carefully and specified with the right CRI, lighting can enhance colour accuracy, create comfort, and positively influence wellbeing. Good lighting is not simply seen, it is felt.
