John Cox, featured in Charged Field, a group exhibition on view April 4 – May 9, 2026 at G-Town Arts, 5 Main Street, Georgetown, CT.
Cox's paintings begin where the signal breaks down. Working from Croton-on-Hudson, NY, he builds his canvases using machine-customized tools — combs, rakes, squeegees — dragging and pulling paint in perfunctory, repetitive gestures that loosely mimic the look of wave interference, static, and garbled video. The marks skip and stutter. Layered transparent glazes build depth that feels less like space and more like transmission.
What he is after is the glitch: that fugitive moment when information falters, when the stream breaks and something unintended appears in its place. The works carry the visual memory of TV static and corrupted graphics, but they are unambiguously handmade — and that tension is the point. Every blemish preserved in the paint, every imperfect pull, reaffirms the human hand inside an overtly mechanical process.
Standing in front of one, you feel the charge of something caught mid-transmission — luminous, urgent, and just slightly out of reach.

I regularly use tape remnants from my paintings to create collages. This process helps me think about composition and color arrangements. It also takes a lot of the control out my hands as these strips of tape are from the edges of my mark making process and are not considered in the same manner as my ‘more serious’ paintings.
Some passages are truly beautiful and assembling these into new works is a rewarding practice.
Pretty sure what’s pictured here is 2 full rolls of painters tape.

From the curatorial statement:
Art plays a unique role during times like these, as refuge, as protest, as a means of meditation or deep contemplation. By creating space for moments of self-reflection, art can act as a means of transposing consciousness. Artworks stand in contrast to the high speed, over saturated, and superficial immediacy of our tech and media obsessed society, as anti-spectacle.

This work has been in my flat files since it dried. I’m not sure what I disagreed with about it. Pulled it out yes and thought it was pretty good for a larger work on paper. These get fussy if the paint dries too quickly.
Using black paint on white paper allows me to reduce the work to a few essential elements. Like playing acoustic guitar or the piano, the limitation provides a structure that highlights specific aspects of the work.

Got this composition from a small portion of another, larger piece. All the pulls in this work are straight and used a bumper/guide. I haven’t made a piece like this, without any curvilinear or gestural lines, in quite a while.
