Are capitalism and democracy still compatible?
That was the key question posed to me by
@politicoeurope ’s Anne McElvoy onstage at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, held by the
@allianceofdemocracies at the Royal Danish Playhouse.
🎥 You can watch the full interview on my website (link in bio).
Some of the people I met at yesterday’s event were so inspiring.
🇻🇪
@leopoldolopezoficial , for example. The former mayor from Caracas became a leader of the Venezuelan opposition to the Maduro regime and was imprisoned, without due process, for seven years before escaping.
🇮🇷 And
@masih.alinejad , a leading light of Iran’s Women, Life, Freedom movement who has survived three assassination attempts. She brought onto the stage with her two women -
@kosareftekharii and
@farideh.salavaty - blinded by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for protesting.
Looking to the next generation, the young people shortlisted in the Democracy Tech Entrepreneurship competition, which I helped judge, will be critical in combating rising authoritarianism through innovative AI solutions.
🇲🇩 None more so than People’s Choice winner
@lucian.boaghe , the 17-year-old from Moldova who has created
@deepguardtech to instantly identify deepfake videos.
Thank you to
@anders_fogh_rasmussen and the
@allianceofdemocracies for the invitation and well done for a great event.
🇩🇰 I just wish I’d had more time to explore Copenhagen. A beautiful city. Have you been?
