John Burr had no idea that The Gates would be James Van Der Beek’s swan song. In fact, the Dallas filmmaker hoped to spotlight the versatility of the former Dawson’s Creek heartthrob, who would be playing a sinister North Texas preacher with murderous intent, and potentially help launch a new chapter in his career. Instead, the release of Burr’s low-budget thriller on Friday, just five weeks after Van Der Beek’s passing at his family’s ranch in Austin, becomes a bittersweet tribute. Burr says Van Der Beek brought depth and personality to the role and left a lasting impression on the cast and crew. The Gates opens theatrically on March 13.
