Phelps-Dodge Copper Refinery on Newtown Creek, Queens, NY, US. During demolition. This plant operated on the creek from the 1850’s until 1983. Probably the largest single (commercial) industrial facility in NYC. It electrolytically refined copper from 99% purity to 99.9%. It was all there for 0.9%! The extra refinement is necessary for electrical copper used in motors and transformers.....magnet wire and bus bars. Shot in 2000. See next photo from inside in 1999.
