First bonded bronze cast of Bukowski … the cigarette gave me some trouble deciding how to mold it- on or off the sculpt….finally, I settled on casting it separately with a premade hole in the mouth. I just didn’t wanna pull a cast and find out I had snapped the cigarette off and the whole thing was for nothing. Plus, this way I could reinforce the cigarette with a piece of paper clip wire, which is pretty strong. This piece was so much fun.

Finally getting to sculpt this madman who entertained me so much over the years- the late and great Charles Bukowski…. Such an iconic face- I must have internalized it as this took just a few hours to get right…then a few more days to finish the finer details.
"Generally speaking, you’re free till you’re about four years old, five, around. Then you go to grammar school, and then you start becoming demented and solved, and orientated and shoved into areas. You lose what individualism you have. If you have enough, of course, you retain some of it. But most don’t have enough. So you become a watcher of game shows, you know, things like that. Here's a little highlight video of what it took to create our Christmas Angel. John and I could not find an appropriate Christmas topper so we decided to make our own. His home is full of antiques and has a vintage vibe so we decided on an angel.
This was weeks in the making. From pulling out an old mold of a ballerina he had sculpted in the '90s to resculpturing a new figure to fit our new life. Pouring a new sculpture and creating the wings and clothing.

It’s been about 35 years but my friend @josephquillansculpture came across some photos of our early education in anatomy. We were lucky enough to find an instructor, the fabulous sculptor Marion Young, shown supervising us in the second photo, who believed in doing things the old-fashioned way and provided us with several bodies to dissect. We skinned them, before medical students would later take over and practice their own surgical disciplines. Even though Marion was a difficult person, we both owe her a great debt, as her instruction was exacting and precise, and she provided us with the foundation to go forward as professional figurative sculptors. She was a great and powerful and independent woman, and both of us were sorry to hear that she had passed.
