Traksewt: Only 19 by Redgum is my earliest memory as a kid of a song that hit me deep emotionally. Lyrics like “Why the Channel Seven chopper chills me to my feet” provided an early lesson in the power of music and how it can tap into something ancient - a feeling beyond logical. Upon release of ‘The Sun Never Sets’ (2005), Triple J invited us on their new segment, ‘Like a version’. Not into covers, but we were intrigued enough to give it a shot. I suggested Only 19, then worked out the chords & sequence while Unkle Ho & Sulo worked on the beat. How to do justice to the classic? An organic approach: real piano accordion for the pulse, a splash of timpani, replaying the guitar riff but tweaking a major to a minor. I learnt accordion as a kid playing in the school bush band. It came out for recording on We Can’t Hear You in that album for some fun and it was luckily in the studio that day. The success of the Triple J segment led to a meeting with John Schumann of Redgum in Adelaide. Initially nervous, we were relieved when he expressed appreciation for our modern take on Only 19, reinvigorating the song for a new gen. He loved our gig, offered subtle stagecraft feedback, and felt we mirrored Red Gum’s past struggles with political music in commercial settings. Schumann joined our tour, culminating in an epic Herd performance at Homebake 2005. The cover had power, so we rerecorded it with Schumann and re-released the album. For the video launch, we invited the vets we connected with over the filming. Seated in the rafters, there were plenty of tears as the crowd cheered them on for their first hip hop gig. The Iraq war was always on our minds back then, like Palestine is today. We were humbled by the strong anti-war sentiment these vets shared, having lived through their PTSD and memories - now not wanting to repeat these mistakes on the young. Over the years, we have had many returned service people tell us what this track meant to them. The track reached 18th of the hottest 100 LaV of all time.

Corrugated Highway Tour - 13 dates down - Perth and Goolwa to go. Thank you so much to everybody who came. You were all absolutely sensational. It was an absolute privilege to have John Schumann & The Vagabond Crew bring the Redgum Years to our stage and have The Estate Camden be included in their successful sold out Corrugated Tour across the country. 3 December 2005, Homebake – The Domain, Sydney. A moment we’ll never forget. Two months after recording our @triple_j Like A Version cover of I Was Only 19, we invited @john.schumann.90 of Redgum to join us live for the first time. It was powerful meeting of voices and generations. The track was later re-recorded with John for the 2006 re-release of The Sun Never Sets.

As well as being a great Australian songwriter, Shane Nicholson is a great producer. Since we started working together back in 2019, he’s been involved in everything I’ve done - including the “Corrugated Highway” (Redgum Years live) double album (pre-release copies available at shows starting next week). So we are absolutely delighted, proud and excited to have him sharing the stage with us at the @thetivolibrisbane on Friday October 24 and at the J Theatre at Noosa on Saturday, October 25.
