From Mayer to Black Canyon City, the pace went out hard and never let up. One of the strongest 50K fields in the country left no space to ease in. Black Canyon demands commitment. If you want the front, you have to claim it early.
Johen didnât hesitate. He spent the entire day inside the top four applying steady pressure at the sharp end of the group.
Early on, a clipped rock sent him into a cactus. Spines took in his arm, but his rhythm held. Later, chasing a surge, he missed a turn at a jeep crossing. A couple of minutes burned through while the fifth and sixth place runners suddenly passed by.
He didnât spiral. Just recalibrated. âThe kitchen was cooking,â he said of the front pack. By Bumblebee, he knew he was in the mix. And he stayed there. 3:23:47. 4th overall. This was composure under load. Fitness and calmness in balance. A marker for the season ahead.
